Legendary Sir Curtly Ambrose has expressed his admiration for Jasprit Bumrah amid his heroic performance for Team India in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and Caribbean. The legendary West Indian believes that there is no need to alter Bumrah’s unorthodox bowling action, despite the Indian pacer’s past struggles with stress fractures.
Ambrose, one of the most lethal pacers the game has ever seen, believes that every fast bowler takes the field with a risk of injury and has hailed Bumrah's unique and highly effective style. Bumrah is considered one of the best all-format pacers of the modern era, but he faced significant back problems, including surgery in March last year.
Following an extensive rehabilitation period, the Indian pacer made a strong comeback just ahead of the ODI World Cup 2024 in November, and since then, he has continued to rule the headlines for his incredible performances across the formats.

Ambrose stressed that unless Bumrah suffers a severe injury, there should be no changes to his bowling action, which has been instrumental in his success so far. The legendary West Indies pacer revealed that he has been a big fan of Bumrah since he first saw him play.
Despite Bumrah's unconventional approach, Ambrose admires his effectiveness and the significant contributions he has made to the Indian cricket team across all formats. The iconic cricketer said that he always enjoys watching Bumrah, who is currently in the Caribbean for the T20 World Cup 2024.
Sir Curtly Ambrose was quoted as saying by PTI: “What I can tell you about Jasprit Bumrah is that I'm a big fan. Ever since I saw him the first time. He's so unconventional but highly effective. And that's what I like about him. When you look at traditional fast bowlers, you wouldn't look at Bumrah; he's so unorthodox.
He has done a great job for India and is still doing a great job in all formats. I met him a couple of years ago when India played in Antigua. He's someone I've always enjoyed watching because he's so different.”
Bumrah's open-chested action puts pressure on his back, but Ambrose believes that managing such risks is part and parcel of being a fast bowler. The legendary pacer added, “From my little experience, there are no two bowlers who are exactly alike. Bowlers may have similarities, but they are never exactly alike, and we all have our different styles. Everyone is different.”
Jasprit Bumrah's unorthodox action should remain unchanged: Ambrose
He believes that every fast bowler faces injuries, and a bowler can't perform effectively if he is constantly worrying about getting hurt. He advises the modern-era bowlers to go out and give their best, regardless of the potential for injury.
Ambrose noted, “The only way Bumrah should change is if he, maybe, sustains a serious injury or has to re-model his action or something.”
He doesn’t think Bumrah's back stress is solely due to his bowling action. However, the 60-year-old leaves judgments to medical experts, as he doesn’t have personal experience with such injuries. Although Ambrose pointed out that even bowlers with seemingly perfect actions, like Ian Bishop, have suffered stress fractures,
He signed off by saying, “I've never been through it. So, it would be unfair for me to even try to say what to do. I will leave that to the medical expert. I don't think Bumrah's stress comes totally from his action.”
