Former New Zealand cricketer Shane Bond expressed his concerns over the fitness of Jasprit Bumrah. He made a bold statement, saying that if the fast bowler faces another back injury at the same spot, then his career will be over.
India pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been out of action since the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 concluded in January. The fast bowler faced a back injury during the last game of the series, which took place at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney, where he was leading the side.
Jasprit Bumrah faced injury during the Australia Tests
Bumrah, who bowled over 150 overs in the series, potentially faced the injury due to extra workload. The pacer experienced pain in his back after bowling just 10 overs in the match and then didn't bowl a single over in the second innings even though he came out to bat.
Following that, Bumrah was ruled out of the England ODI series as well as the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which India won. The pacer reportedly is all set to make a comeback through the Indian Premier League (IPL), but considering his injury history, he will always be under the radar.
I wouldn't want to be playing him in any more than two in a row - Shane Bond on Jasprit Bumrah
Shane Bond feels that Jasprit Bumrah will be fine with time but stressed that his workload needs to be managed well. He pointed out how moving from IPL to the Test series against England could be dangerous for the pacer, saying that he shouldn't play three games in a row.
"Look, I think Booms will be fine, but it's just that [workload] management [matters]," Bond told ESPNCricinfo. "Looking at the tours and the schedule going forward, where are the opportunities to give him a break, but really where are the danger periods? And often it is that the [transition from] IPL to the Test championship will be a risk."
"He's too valuable for the next World Cup and stuff. So you'd be looking at five Tests in England, I wouldn't want to be playing him in any more than two in a row. Coming out of the back end of the IPL into a Test match is going to be a huge risk. And so how do they manage that is going to be key."
Another injury in the same spot, that could be a career-ender - Shane Bond on Jasprit Bumrah
Shane Bond pointed out that the Indian team management would be happy if Jasprit Bumrah goes through the English summer without any injury issues. But he was quick to warn them as well, saying another injury at the same point could be a "career-ender. He added:
"They may say, look, it's four Test matches in total. Or three. If we can get him through the English summer and he's fit, we can probably then go with some confidence that we can carry him across the rest of the formats.
"So that's hard because he is your best bowler, but if he has another injury in the same spot, that could be a career-ender, potentially, because I'm not sure you can have surgery on that spot again."
