The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) medical team has delayed ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah's return to the IPL 2025 season. The star India and Mumbai Indians bowler was initially expected to be match-ready by early April, but he is unlikely to make his comeback due to concerns over his back injury.
Bumrah suffered an injury during the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in Sydney this January. The 31-year-old pacer was ruled out of the 2025 Champions Trophy, where India triumphed earlier this month. Team India's spinners dominated on the spin-friendly pitches in Dubai.
Jasprit Bumrah's Injury Is a Bit More Serious - Report
Jasprit Bumrah's injury appears to be more severe than expected. He has started bowling in the nets but has yet to reach full intensity. The BCCI medical team, closely monitoring his progress at the Centre of Excellence, remains cautious about his return to avoid long-term issues, including the risk of a stress fracture.
"Bumrah's injury is a bit more serious. The medical team wants to ensure he doesn't suffer a stress fracture. Bumrah himself is being careful. He is bowling at the CoE, but it could take longer to get back in full swing. No definite timeline has been set yet, but one hopes he gets back by mid-April," The Times of India quoted a source as saying.

Jasprit Bumrah Has Been Out of Action Since the Fifth Test in BGT
Jasprit Bumrah sustained a lower back injury during the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney this January. He left the field in the first innings and did not return to bowl as India suffered an eight-wicket defeat.
The BCCI and chief selector Ajit Agarkar were optimistic about his recovery in time for the Champions Trophy, but he was ruled out. India replaced him with Harshit Rana in both the Champions Trophy squad and the ODI series against England.
The pacer is not yet in optimal condition to return to competitive cricket. Former New Zealand pacer and Mumbai Indians bowling coach Shane Bond recently warned that Bumrah is on the verge of a stress fracture in his back. Given his history with such injuries, an early return could impact his career longevity.
Mumbai Indians Coach Mahela Jayawardene on Jasprit Bumrah's Absence
At a press conference on March 19, Mumbai Indians coach Mahela Jayawardene admitted that Jasprit Bumrah's absence is a significant setback.
"He just started that progress. We have to wait and see what their feedback is on him. At the moment, everything is going well but obviously, it is on a day-to-day basis, the progress. He is in good spirits and hopefully, he can join the team sooner," the ex-Sri Lankan skipper stated.
Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar opened the bowling for the team. Mumbai Indians struggled at the start, losing their first two matches before securing their first victory against Kolkata Knight Riders. They will next face Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Ekana Cricket Stadium on April 4.
