Former India National Cricket Team pacer and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chairman of selectors, Chetan Sharma, has shared his views on the much-talked-about Jasprit Bumrah situation.

Chetan Sharma shielded Jasprit Bumrah from criticism over his workload management strategy and said that the pace spearhead is just following the orders of the medical team.

If our physios are telling a player to manage workload, I think we should listen - Chetan Sharma on Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah is arguably the best bowler in the world at the moment, and India are lucky to have a pacer of his calibre in the squad.

However, he has faced heavy backlash because of his limited availability in India's recent five-match Test series against the England National Cricket Team.

Before heading into the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Jasprit Bumrah told the BCCI selection committee that he would only be available for three matches to avoid any injuries and manage his workload.

Jasprit Bumrah played the first, third, and fourth games, where he bowled 119.4 overs and picked 14 wickets. Despite his good contributions, India didn't win any matches that Jasprit Bumrah played, and him missing the final Test of the series left fans and the cricket fraternity angry.

Many questioned Bumrah's commitment to the team, but Chetan Sharma has lent support to the pace spearhead. He said that the medical team and physios are the best judges, and a player should strictly follow their advice.

“If the medical team advises, if the doctor tells me that I have to take antibiotics, then I have to consume them. If our physios are telling a player to manage workload, I think we should listen to them because they are the better judges,” said Sharma on the sidelines of the country’s public service broadcaster Prasar Bharati signing a deal with CricViz for the telecast of 104 episodes of “The Great Indian Cricket Show” on Doordarshan, as quoted by Indian Express.

I’m really proud with the way India played in England - Chetan Sharma

Under Shubman Gill's captaincy, India drew the five-match Test series against England 2-2 and Chetan Sharma was left mighty impressed with the team's performance.

Chetan Sharma said that he was very proud of the efforts of the young Indian team and backed them to clinch the Asia Cup 2025 title.

“I know that whoever is selected will be the best for the country. And the kind of cricket we are playing right now, I’m really proud with the way India played in England. And I’m very confident that we are definitely going to win the Asia Cup (to be played in T20 format) because soon after that we are playing the T20 World Cup (in 2026) in India,” he said.

“It’s a very big thing when you are playing (the World Cup) in you own backyard. If the intent is right, the results will also be good,” added Sharma after the event.

Look, that is up to the selectors what they see - Chetan Sharma on India's Asia Cup squad

The India squad for the Asia Cup 2025 is set to be announced on Tuesday, August 19. When asked to share his thoughts on whether Shubman Gill should be picked, Chetan Sharma said that it's up to the selectors and they should name the best possible 15 players in the squad.

“Look, that is up to the selectors what they see. My opinion does not matter because I am no longer the chairman (of selectors), so I will only say that the best possible team should be selected. We have such good cricketers that not just the top-15 but even if the top-30 are selected, they are all very good. Really proud of them,” he said.
