Team India captain Jasprit Bumrah was absent from the field for close to three hours on Day 2 of the fifth and final Test against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 series. Bumrah was cleared to bat in India's second innings of the match, but a final decision regarding his bowling is yet to be made.

Jasprit Bumrah picked up an early wicket for India on Day 2 by dismissing Marnus Labuschagne for just two runs in the first session. He bowled 10 overs in the first innings, giving away 33 runs. However, the right-arm fast bowler left the field at the start of the second session due to a back spasm as a precaution.

Jasprit Bumrah Taken for a Precautionary Scan After a Back Spasm

In Bumrah's absence, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Nitish Kumar Reddy cleaned up the Australian lower order. India bowled Australia out for 181 in their first innings, taking a narrow lead of four runs. Siraj and Prasidh each took three wickets, while Bumrah and Nitish Reddy claimed two wickets apiece.

India hopes Bumrah will be available on Sunday, with a decision regarding his bowling to be made based on how he feels in the morning. Bumrah had a precautionary scan after experiencing a back spasm, but it's not considered serious. He's expected to be fine to bat, but his bowling will depend on his condition.

"Bumrah was taken for a precautionary scan after a back spasm but nothing serious at the moment. He should be okay to bat but a final call on his bowling will be taken on the basis of how he feels in the morning. So let's see and the medical team is closely monitoring him," a well-placed source told TimesofIndia.com.

It Will Be Slightly Beneficial for Us – Andrew McDonald

Australia's camp is closely monitoring Bumrah’s situation, with their head coach acknowledging that Bumrah's absence could benefit the hosts during their chase.

"He is the leading wicket-taker in the series so it will be slightly beneficial for us. He is an incredibly talented bowler and can bowl on any surface. If he wasn't to be then India will have to come up with a new plan," says Andrew McDonald.

India Needs Jasprit Bumrah's Services with Both Bat and Ball on the Final Day

India ended Day 2 at 141/6, with Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar at the crease. The team is in need of Jasprit Bumrah's services on the final day, with both bat and ball. India aims to surpass the 200-run mark and then capitalize on their lead with the ball to secure victory in the Test match.

India is aiming for a win to level the series 2-2 and retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. A victory will also keep them in the race for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final. Australia, on the other hand, needs a win to clinch the Test series against the Men in Blue for the first time in a decade.
