Former Indian bowling coach Bharat Arun has come out in support of Jasprit Bumrah after the star pacer faced heavy criticism for missing the series-deciding fifth and final Test against England at The Oval in the name of workload management.

Jasprit Bumrah has had a history of serious injuries. Keeping that in mind, the Indian cricket team management had already made it clear that the fast bowler would be available for only three matches in the five-match Test series in England, and they stuck to that plan.

However, this call didn’t go down well with many, and they questioned Bumrah’s commitment to the team. And now Bharat Arun slammed the criticism, calling it “unfair” and “short-sighted.” He reminded critics that Bumrah has battled a serious injury and needs careful management to protect one of the world’s premier fast bowlers from long-term damage.

While Bumrah was released from the squad midway through the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025, India pulled off a nail-biting six-run win on Day 5 in the fifth and final Test against England at The Oval to level the Test series 2-2.

Mohammed Siraj emerged as the leading wicket-taker in the Test series with 23 wickets.

It’s so sad to hear about this stuff against Jasprit Bumrah: Bharat Arun

Bharat Arun was quoted as saying by The Indian Express: “It’s so sad to hear about this stuff against Bumrah. He has had a serious surgery, and people should understand it is not as if the surgery is done and he is all good forever. No, this is far more serious stuff on his back now.”

Meanwhile, a PTI report claimed that the BCCI could get tougher on players “picking and choosing” matches, as some board officials weren’t pleased that Bumrah couldn’t handle the workload of all five Tests. Reacting to the report, Arun said, “It’s not picking and choosing. Just a few months back, he was hailed as the world’s greatest fast bowler in Australia, and now, he is being criticized unfairly. Did he underperform in the three tests? Two fifers he took.”

Bharat Arun slams double standards in Jasprit Bumrah workload management row

Explaining the Indian team management’s decision, Arun made it clear that India had announced Jasprit Bumrah would play only three Tests well before the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 to avoid pressure to overplay him and “this kind of nonsense.”

He signed off by saying, “Not for the world to fall to temptation and say play him, as this test is crucial … His body is like that now. We have to be careful and understand how hard this entire effort is and what a great feat it is for him to do what he is doing—playing for India through all this.”

Notably, Bumrah missed the second and final Test against England. The pacer played in the first, third, and fourth tests and managed 14 wickets in the series that ended in a 2-2 draw in England.
