The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah is all set to take over the leadership of the International Cricket Council (ICC). As per the reports in the ANI, it is learned that he will be succeeding Greg Barclay as the chairman of the International Cricket Council.
It is learned that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is hopeful that Jay Shah will be elected unopposed. The BCCI secretary has received a lot of support from the other cricketing boards and this has seen even the Indian body express their interest to see Shah become head of the global cricket body.
ECB and Cricket Australia support Jay Shah to be ICC Chairman
To secure the nomination, ICC requires a proposer and a seconder. The reports claimed that England and Wales Cricket Board along with Cricket Australia have backed Jay Shah to take over the role, solidifying his bid for the top position at the International Cricket Council.
Notably, Greg Barclay has been holding the position of the ICC Chairman for the last four years and is also eligible for another term. But the New Zealander has mentioned that he isn't keen to continue hence making the position of the head of the global cricket board vacant.
According to the rules of the ICC, each of the 16 current ICC directors must submit their nominations by August 27 to be considered for the chairmanship. So far there hasn't been any interest shown by Jay Shah. But reports claimed that he will be nominating himself and will be elected unopposed.
If he becomes the Chairman of the International Cricket Council, he will be the youngest-ever ICC chief at the age of 36. Shah will also be joining the likes of Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N. Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar as leaders from India who earlier served in the same role.
The newly elected ICC chairman will also be following the new tenure set by the governing body. Earlier it used to be three terms of two years each but now it will be two terms of three years each.
He is currently serving as the secretary of the Indian body and has done some great things for Indian cricket. Apart from this, Shah is also the ICC director and chairs the ICC's Finance and Commercial Affairs sub-committee, one of the most influential bodies within the ICC.
Shah's leadership in the role with ICC along with the things that he has done for Indian cricket makes his favourite to take the role. If he gets appointed as the ICC Chairman, he will be serving for at least three years, which will make him eligible to become the president of the BCCI in 2028.
Recently, there were reports that claimed that Jay Shah is keen to bring changes to the ICC. The BCCI secretary reportedly was unhappy with the way the T20 World Cup 2024 was held in the United States and the West Indies.
