Jonny Bairstow will make his Big Bash League (BBL) debut after signing with the Melbourne Renegades for the upcoming season. The wicketkeeper-batter has agreed to a deal worth more than $400,000 and joins former England captain Ben Stokes and Zak Crawley among the English players heading to the BBL this season.
Bairstow will replace New Zealand cricketer Tim Seifert, who recently joined the Sydney Sixers. With the Renegades moving away from Marvel Stadium this season, Bairstow will also have the opportunity to make the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) his home venue throughout his first BBL campaign.
Jonny Bairstow Embraces Return to Australia After Ashes Rivalry
Jonny Bairstow has featured in three Ashes tours of Australia. He scored Test centuries in Perth in 2017 and Sydney in 2022, but his Ashes history also includes several controversial moments.
Australian fans will remember his involvement in the 2017 Perth incident with Cameron Bancroft, as well as the stumping by Alex Carey during the 2023 Ashes at Lord’s. Bairstow, however, is ready to embrace the reception he could receive during his first BBL season.
The wicketkeeper-batter said he has always enjoyed playing in Australia and is looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere at the MCG.
“I've always loved playing in Australia. The crowds are passionate and I've always enjoyed that side of the contest. I'm really excited about joining the Renegades. Having the MCG as our home ground is pretty special and I'm looking forward to getting out there, playing the way I play and hopefully entertaining the fans.”
“I know there's been a bit of history over the years and I'm sure I'll hear plenty about it when I get over there. That's part of the fun of it.”
Clint McKay Connection Helps Melbourne Renegades Sign Jonny Bairstow
Jonny Bairstow has a long-standing connection with Renegades high-performance manager Clint McKay. The pair worked together at Yorkshire in 2010 when McKay played for the county. The Renegades were looking for a top-order batter who could also provide wicketkeeping options.
He had previously agreed to join the Melbourne Stars in 2020, but that move did not happen after he was recalled to England’s Test squad for the tour of Sri Lanka. He will now finally get the opportunity to play in the BBL and make the MCG his home venue for the season.
Head coach Luke Ronchi believes Bairstow can make a major impact with his aggressive approach and international experience.
“Jonny has been one of the most damaging white-ball batters in world cricket for a long period of time and we're delighted to have him joining us,” Ronchi said. “He's played 100 Test matches, won World Cups and performed in some of the biggest games and competitions around the world. That experience is incredibly valuable to our group.”
“But just as importantly, he plays the game in a way that we want to play. He's aggressive, he puts pressure back on the opposition and he's capable of changing a game very quickly. We're building a squad that we believe can play an exciting and aggressive brand of cricket and Jonny is a great fit for that.”
Jonny Bairstow Builds Franchise Career After England Exit
Jonny Bairstow has not played for England in any format since the 2024 T20 World Cup semi-final defeat against India. He was also dropped from the Test squad following the 2024 tour of India, with his 100th Test in Dharamsala becoming his final appearance in the format.
Bairstow has continued to play competitive cricket for Yorkshire, London Spirit in The Hundred and several franchise teams around the world. He has played in competitions such as the Indian Premier League, Pakistan and South Africa.
Former England captain Ben Stokes will play for the Adelaide Strikers, while Zak Crawley is returning to the Perth Scorchers. The Overton twins are set to feature for the Melbourne Stars, while Tom Curran has joined the Brisbane Heat.
