Wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler has opened up about his future in international cricket with the England national cricket team. The white-ball specialist expressed his desire to keep representing England at the international level despite stepping down as captain after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Jos Buttler is currently playing for the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The right-handed batter has scored 166 runs in three matches at an average of 83 and a strike rate of 172.92, including two half-centuries. He is in third place on the list of leading run-getters in the tournament.
Jos Buttler Stepped Down as England's White-Ball Captain
Jos Buttler stepped down as England's white-ball captain after a disappointing Champions Trophy campaign, where the team failed to win a single match and finished last in their group. England suffered defeats to Australia, South Africa, and Afghanistan, which led to their early exit from the tournament.
Buttler had taken over from Eoin Morgan in 2022. He had enjoyed early success with a T20 World Cup title in 2022, where England defeated Pakistan in the final at the MCG. However, his tenure became increasingly inconsistent. England crashed out in the league stage of the 2023 ODI World Cup in India.
The Three Lions made it to the semi-finals in the 2024 T20 World Cup, but they were defeated by India. After a string of underwhelming campaigns, Buttler decided to step down from captaincy in both the ODI and T20I formats.
I've Only Stepped Down as Captain - Jos Buttler
Buttler has addressed speculation about his international future, stating that he has stepped down from captaincy. In a conversation with The Times of India, Buttler expressed hope to continue playing for England. The experienced batter said that his decision was limited to captaincy.
"I certainly hope so. I've only stepped down as captain. So yeah, I hope I can play as a player now," Buttler said, as quoted by the Times of India.
Buttler captained England in 45 One Day Internationals (ODIs), managing 18 wins and suffering 26 losses, with one match abandoned. He led 51 T20I matches, securing 26 wins and facing 22 defeats, while three games ended without a result.
It's Been a Really Good Experience - Jos Buttler
Jos Buttler said that his time with the Gujarat Titans has been thoroughly enjoyable so far. Buttler said that he has found his place within the team. He noted that Vikram Solanki, Ashish Nehra, and captain Shubman Gill's efforts have built a welcoming and comfortable team environment.
"It's been a really good experience. I've really enjoyed it. Obviously, it's a new challenge, a new team. So, it felt like the first day of school when I arrived. But no, I've settled in really well. I've been warmly welcomed into the group," Buttler said.
"There's an excellent vibe around the team. You know, the leadership group of Vikram Solanki, Ashish Nehra, and Shubman Gill have created a really nice environment, and I feel very comfortable," he added.
