England batter Jos Buttler has started his recovery after undergoing surgery on his left hamstring. Jos Buttler suffered the injury while batting against Sri Lanka last month, and the problem has forced him to miss England’s upcoming white-ball assignments.

The 36-year-old is now focused on getting fit again, but there is no clear date for his return. Despite the setback, Buttler remains determined to make a strong comeback. Earlier, England officially appoint ex-CSK star as Test bowling coach as Stephen Fleming’s influence grows.

Jos Buttler undergoes hamstring surgery, set for extended recovery

Jos Buttler shared a picture from his hospital bed on Instagram, with his left leg in a brace, and confirmed that his surgery had been successful. The former England captain also made it clear that the injury has only increased his motivation to return to the game.

Sharing the photo on his Instagram story, Buttler wrote, "Successful [sic] surgery and on the road to recovery. Feeling more motivated than ever!”

Buttler hurt his hamstring during England’s second ODI against Sri Lanka at Headingley on September 24. He initially walked off the field but returned for a short time before his innings came to an end. The injury has ruled him out of England’s tri-series in Pakistan.

The Englishman is also expected to miss the white-ball tour of Australia in November. This has also put Buttler’s participation in the upcoming SA20 season in doubt. He was expected to play for Durban’s Super Giants in the South African T20 league, which will get underway on January 17.

Jos Buttler's SA20 participation uncertain after surgery

Well, the senior batter’s participation in the SA20 2027 will depend on how well he recovers from the surgery. The injury came at a really wrong time for the former England captain, as he had just found his form with the bat.

After the ordinary T20 World Cup 2026, he scored 466 runs in nine games. Buttler also had a memorable campaign in the Hundred, leading the Manchester Super Giants to the title. He became the first player to reach 15,000 career runs in T20 cricket during the tournament.

But the fitness is still an issue. Buttler has suffered a few soft-tissue injuries in recent years, mainly with his calves. He also suffered a similar problem with his left hamstring during the 2024 IPL season. Amid this, Ben Stokes nightclub row comes back to haunt Totoa Auvaa as Saracens sack the player.

Jos Buttler gets big relief amid injury concerns

Amid the fitness concerns, there was some positive news for Jos Buttler, as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) handed him a one-year contract extension.

However, this deal is set to expire before the ICC ODI World Cup 2027, but England managing director Rob Key has made it clear that Buttler will remain part of the team’s plans.

Key stated, "We don't see it that Jos Buttler and Adil Rashid aren't going to be a part of that World Cup. We have them very much factored in. If they weren't a part of it, we wouldn't have been playing them since then. They're both desperate to play for England. It's the way the system works as much as anything else. There'll be decisions to be made next year.”
