England’s interim white-ball coach, Marcus Trescothick, has expressed strong support for Jos Buttler to remain at the helm of England's white-ball team, despite the recent challenges faced by the team.

Last October, England's ODI World Cup 2023 journey ended earlier than expected in the group stage, sparking widespread criticism of Jos Buttler's captaincy. They also failed to defend their T20 World Cup title earlier this year.

Even though the England cricket team managed to reach the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and Caribbean, their performances raised eyebrows and led to questions about their direction under Buttler's captaincy.

Amidst the heavy criticism, Trescothick is confident that Jos Buttler is the right person to guide the England team forward in white-ball cricket.

He believes that Jos Buttler possesses the necessary qualities behind the scenes that are crucial for leading the team effectively.

Well, Trescothick is aiming to boost Jos Buttler's strengths as the captain and help him steer the team towards success, as he is all set to join the England team for the upcoming three-match T20I series and five-match ODI series against Australia.

Acknowledging the tough World Cup experiences, the interim head coach has suggested that these setbacks have perhaps left the England team feeling disheartened about their game, but the team is still in a solid position, and Jos Buttler is the right leader to carry them through this period.

Trescothick's confidence in Buttler remains unwavering, saying there is no reason for a change in leadership in England’s white-ball set-up. He is focused on enhancing Buttler's abilities to ensure the team's evolution in a positive direction after recent setbacks.

I don't see changes in captaincy anytime soon: Trescothick

Trescothick was quoted as saying by Sky Sports: “I think he is (right person to lead the team). The attributes he shows behind the scenes are really important to lead this team. Me coming in is just to try to enhance that as much as possible, to make him feel like this is the way the group is going to go, the way the team is going to evolve in a different way to get the most out of him as captain.”

The coach further noted, “For whatever reason, the tough couple of World Cups they have had, they've potentially come out of those not feeling great about our one-day cricket, but it's still in a really good place, and Jos is going to lead that forward for a period of time at the moment, and I don't see that changing. There are so many things he does so well that we've just got to bring out, enhance, and make it better as we go along.”

Meanwhile, Trescothick acknowledged that there's been some thought given to the possibility of Buttler stepping away from wicketkeeping duties to concentrate more on his role as captain and batter during the upcoming white-ball series against Australia.

In this scenario, Phil Salt is expected to take over the wicketkeeping responsibilities for the T20Is, while England's Test player Jamie Smith could step in as the wicketkeeper for the ODIs, and Trescothick feels it is a practical option for the team to explore in the upcoming games.
