Former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has denied another central contract and has also opted not to feature in New Zealand's Test side against Zimbabwe, which is scheduled to be played from the 30th of July.
However, the newly appointed New Zealand coach, Rob Walter, is still positive about Kane Williamson returning to the national side.
“Myself and Kane have had a nice conversation, a long conversation. It was really great to catch up with him and discuss cricket. It was great to get his lens on New Zealand cricket and the Black Caps. He’s been so influential in their success over the years," said the coach, Rob Walter, to the New Zealand Herald.
"But then also to discuss what the future might look like. I’ve said it repeatedly; he’s still very committed to the Black Caps and wants to play international cricket. I don’t think it’ll be too long until we see that,” added the newly appointed coach.
Kane Williamson is still keen to play international cricket
Despite rejecting a similar offer and signing a casual contract with the New Zealand cricket board, Kane Williamson was seen starring in 9 of the 13 Tests New Zealand played in the last year and also showed commanding form, going on to score more than 1000 runs.
Often said to be the greatest ever batter from New Zealand, Williamson has played in 105 matches in the red-ball format and has scored 9,276 runs at an average of 54.88.
Kane Williamson has played for New Zealand and was part of the squad that ended as runner-up in the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
As a skipper, he has led them to the finals of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup and the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup. Williamson also led New Zealand to the WTC Final 2021 win.
Williamson rejects central contact twice in two years
This is the second time in two years that the Kiwi veteran has decided to reject the central contract from the New Zealand Cricket. Rejecting the contract hands him the opportunity to select his availability and hence take up desirable, lucrative contracts in franchise cricket.
After rejecting the central contract both in 2024 and 2025, Williamson has been found playing in various cricket leagues around the world. He was playing his first season in the last SA20 for the Durban Super Giants and was also seen making his return to England with the Vitality Blast Men 2025 for Middlesex.
However, Williamson was not seen featuring in the IPL 2025, as he went unsold in the auction, but was seen sharing his expertise from the commentary box.
Kane will be seen leading the London Spirit in The Hundred
Kane Williamson has returned to England to feature in franchise-level tournaments, as he is currently participating in the Vitality T20 Blast and will next be seen leading the London Spirit in The Hundred.
This will be Kane Williamson's debut season in The Hundred, as the batter was picked by Birmingham Phoenix in 2021 but had to withdraw his name due to injury concerns. Williamson became the first overseas player to be signed directly in The Hundred, outside of the draft.
