New Zealand veteran batter Kane Williamson has made a Virat Kohli-like international comeback after returning to the ODI side for the first time since the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. The batter was dismissed for a duck on his return game against England.
England are currently on their tour to New Zealand, and they have managed to take a lead over the hosts with a win in the T20I leg of the series, which was heavily affected by rain. The Mitchell Santner-led side misses the services of Glenn Phillips as they advance to the One-dayers.
However, the Kiwis have got their veteran star, Kane Williamson, back in the camp for the first time since the ICC Champions Trophy final against India in March 2025 in Dubai.
Kane Williamson misses out on an International comeback, resembling Indian veteran Virat Kohli
Unlike Virat Kohli, Kiwi star Kane Williamson has not retired from any format of the game and continues to play across all formats of the game. However, he usurped the central contract, which handed him the liberty to pick and choose the games he wanted to feature in.
Williamson has not yet provided a verdict on his stand for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026 or the 2027 ICC World Cup in India and South Africa, respectively. Amid such circumstances, he made his much-awaited return to the game, but the joy was too short-lived for the New Zealand fans.
As he came in to bat at no. 3, his usual spot in the team for New Zealand in ODIs, Williamson was dismissed for a first-ball duck against Brydon Carse. He was gone first ball, and Carse was on a hat-trick until Daryl Mitchell defended the third ball firmly.
He has been compared with Indian veteran Virat Kohli, the legendary batter who also made his international comeback just a week before in a similar fashion, with a duck against Australia in Perth.
Harry Brook dominates with a magnificent hundred in the First ODI
The track at Mount Maunganui doesn't seem to be the finest to bat on, as first the English batters and now the Kiwi batters struggled to gather runs easily on this pitch. It is unlike the flattest tracks in New Zealand.
England looked in grave danger with their 6 wickets falling in no time, none having breached even a double-digit score. Veterans like Joe Root and Jos Buttler, much like Kane Williamson, were dismissed for very low scores.
England's new skipper, Harry Brook, however, seemed to be batting on some other track. He fancied his chances on the Kiwi bowlers and hit them to all parts of the ground. With no holding back, he smacked the white-ball, scoring 135 runs off 101 balls, and was backed by Jamie Overton down the order.
Brydon Carse runs through the New Zealand batting order
Led by Brook's captivating hundred, England marched past the score of 200 and finished with a target set on 224 after Brook fell as the last English wicket to captain Mitchell Santner.
New Zealand batters struggled in front of Brydon Carse, who started the proceedings with a splendid opening spell with the new ball. He dismissed Will Young, Kane Williamson, and then a good-looking Tom Latham, reducing New Zealand to 4 wickets before even 100 runs on the board.
