The three-time IPL champions, KKR, have been struggling since their bid for Bangladesh premier pacer Mustafizur Rahman. Rahman was bought for a whopping INR 9.20 crores in the IPL 2026 mini-auction; however, the team has been receiving threats due to the increased anti-Bangladesh sentiment among Indians.
The Kolkata Knight Riders camp was lit up after the mini-auction 2026. The KKR management relished their supremacy in the auction with the massive purse they carried into the auction. They flexed their massive purse when they bought Mustafizur Rahman for a whopping INR 9.20 crores, despite having bought the two highest-paying players in the auction.
However, ever since the move, the Kolkata Knight Riders have struggled with several moves, and the act of Hindu mortality has invoked a sense of anti-Bangladesh movement among some of the Indian groups.
KKR and the Mustafizur Rahman controversy
Months before the IPL 2026 season begins, another controversy has started to engulf the tournament. Kolkata Knight Riders, the three-time champions and the third most successful team in the history of the competition, are facing threats against playing Bangladesh seasoned pacer Mustafizur Rahman.
Rahman was a clever buy for the Kolkata Knight Riders, as he is one of the finest and most successful players from Bangladesh, representing them in 257 internationals. He has also played in eight IPL seasons.
The anti-Rahman sentiment has come up for the first time within the IPL, as reports of violence and lynchings have been reported against the Hindus in Bangladesh. This has led to anti-Bangladesh sentiment among Indian clans. According to them, bringing in a Bangladeshi is insensitive at the moment.
KKR issued threats; Shah Rukh Khan declared a 'traitor' by political figures
Kolkata Knight Riders have been issued a threat against not playing the Bangladesh superstar. Considering the impactful lineup of KKR and the limited spot for overseas players, Mustafizur Rahman would not have featured in many games, given he would also be on national duty between the 16th and 23rd of April.
The backlash has not only been limited to KKR, but also the face of the team, co-owner Shah Rukh Khan, has been labelled a 'traitor' by political leader Sangeet Som. He had also called for a ban on Bangladesh players.
Some political groups from Madhya Pradesh have issued further threats of physical disruption, vowing to invade stadiums and vandalise property if Mustafizur plays any match for KKR. Social media campaigns like #BoycottKKR and #BoycottIPL have also called for the boycott of India's most loved tournament.
BCCI is yet to respond to the controversy
Neither the Knight Riders management nor the BCCI has made any response to such claims, nor has it attempted to address the unrest and threats with an official statement. However, as per reports from InsideSport, a senior BCCI official has reported that the board is yet to make a call on it, and they are awaiting any direction from the government.
“We have to understand that it is a delicate situation. We have always been in touch with the government on evolving diplomatic situations and haven’t heard anything that would push us to ban players from Bangladesh. So yes, Mustafizur will play in the IPL. Bangladesh is not an enemy nation," the quoted official said.
