The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain Faf du Plessis failed to perform with the bat against Shreyas Iyer-led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 36th match of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) on Sunday, April 21, at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Faf du Plessis was heading into the match on the back of three good performances for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He smashed 44 runs against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Jaipur, 61 runs against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Mumbai, and 62 runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Bengaluru.

Expectations were sky-high from Faf du Plessis when Royal Challengers Bengaluru were chasing down a humongous total against the Knight Riders and the RCB skipper was disappointing with the bat. He managed to score just 7 runs off 7 balls with one four before getting dismissed by Varun Chakravarthy.

On the first ball of the 4th over, the KKR mystery spinner bowled a floated delivery on full-length and Faf du Plessis tried to smash the ball for a four by hitting it down the ground. Venkatesh Iyer, who was at the mid-on moved quickly to his left and dived to pull off an absolutely stunning catch.

Earlier, batting first, Kolkata Knight Riders posted 222/6 on the board riding on the back of brilliant batting performances from Phil Salt, Shreyas Iyer, Rinku, and Ramandeep Singh. This was the joint highest total of Kolkata Knight Riders against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, equalling their 222/3 in the inaugural IPL match in 2008.

For Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Yash Dayal, who was quite expensive, and Cameron Green bagged two wickets each while Mohammed Siraj and Lockie Ferguson bagged one wicket each in the match.

Speaking during the mid-innings break, Ramandeep Singh who slammed 24 runs off 9 balls said that he just wanted to smash the ball when he came to bat. Ramandeep Singh gave all the credit to the KKR coach Abhishek Nayar for helping the players prepare for the matches.

"I just wanted to whack the ball, luckily it was my day. Slow bumpers were not easy to hit, that's what we will do. 222 is a really good score on this pitch, pace on the ball is easy to hit. All credit to Abhishek Nayar, he prepares us this way and all our net sessions resembles a match. We've got a legend in the side in Narine and we will want to watch the legend on show today."

Meanwhile, Royal Challengers Bengaluru would be looking forward to winning the match against the Kolkata Knight Riders in the reverse fixture after losing against them in the previous match. On March 29, 2024, Kolkata Knight Riders thumped the Royal Challengers Bengaluru by 7 wickets with 19 balls remaining in Bengaluru.
