The India National Cricket Team has had a really disappointing start while chasing the daunting and record target of 549 runs against South Africa at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. Indian openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal failed to get off to a start the hosts needed on Day 4.

After Marco Jansen removed Jaiswal for 13, KL Rahul made the mistake under pressure and lost his wicket to the Proteas spinner Simon Harmer early in the innings at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium. Simon Harmer floated a delivery outside off, tempting Rahul to step forward.

The ball spun sharply off the pitch, and Rahul misjudged it, attempting a rushed shot across the line. The ball beat the bat completely and crashed into the stumps, sending the bails flying. The right-handed batter was dismissed for just 6, as India found themselves in trouble at 21 for 2.

Even in the first innings, Rahul was unsettled by the South African spinner Keshav Maharaj for 22 runs off 63 balls in Guwahati. The Karnataka batter has been one of the biggest disappointments for India in the ongoing two-match Test series against South Africa.

He could make only 39 and 1 runs during the team’s crushing 30-run defeat in the first Test against the Proteas side at the Eden Gardens, and now he has yet again let his team down in Guwahati. Before the South Africa Test series, Rahul had a miserable Australia tour, scoring 11 and 38 runs in two ODIs.

Even against South Africa A, the middle-order batter could not score more than 50 runs across the two innings. However, Rahul had smashed a fifty and a hundred against the West Indies, but his inconsistent performances in whites are slowly becoming a headache for the Indian side.

Following another flop show in whites, fans have been slamming Rahul for not stepping up to be a senior player in this tough situation. Many questioned his place in India’s Test XI, while some suggested he retire from the format to make space for a deserving player.

KL Rahul set to lead India in South Africa ODIs, backed by solid captaincy record

After the ongoing Test series, Rahul will lead the Indian cricket team in the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa, starting on November 30 in Ranchi, after the regular captain Shubman Gill was ruled out of the series due to a neck injury.

In ODIs, Rahul has captained India 12 times, won eight times, and faced four losses. In Tests, Rahul has led India three times, winning twice and losing once, while he has captained the side only once and secured a win in T20Is.
