After Shubman Gill's injury alongside Shreyas Iyer's absence, KL Rahul was designated as India's stand-in skipper for the ODI series against South Africa. He recently marked his 9th ODI victory as the captain of the Indian team and had some credit reserved for his players.
Harshit Rana, the young Indian rising star, has silenced his critics with a superb spell in the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi as he returned with the figures of 3/65 in his 10-over spell. KL Rahul, his captain, has backed him for his terrific show.
Harshit Rana put on a splendid show in Ranchi
Harshit Rana has had to face immense criticism; several former players started questioning his unreasonable selection into the Indian team for several different formats of the game. However, Harshit put on a promising show in Australia, as he bowled very well in the final ODI in Sydney.
Picking up a 4-wicket haul under those conditions, Rana was picked for the Indian team for the South Africa series as well. He has not disappointed Gautam Gambhir and his captain as well, with some very crucial wickets for India.
Sharing the new ball alongside Arshdeep Singh, he dismissed opener Ryan Rickelton and Quinton de Kock, who came off a century against Pakistan, for ducks. After a double-wicket opening over, Harshit went for some runs before he dismissed Dewald Brevis in his second spell.
KL Rahul calls Harshit Rana a special addition to the Indian dressing room
Indian captain KL Rahul was all praise for his paceman Harshit Rana, who has had to face immense criticism over the last few months. He praised the youngsters' stunning show in Ranchi, shedding light on his skillset as a strike bowler with the new ball.
Speaking in the post-match conference, he highlighted Harshit's raw pace and the undue advantage he gets due to his lanky texture and the overall impact he has with the ball. He was mentioned as a 'special' addition to the Indian team.
"Harshit's done really well. We all knew he had the potential and we knew the minute he came into that dressing room that he's special. That is what Team India has been looking for. Someone who is tall, someone who can bowl fast, someone who hits the deck, someone who can give a little bit of runs as well at the back end," KL Rahul said in the post-match presentation.
"So, he's still someone who's developing, but we see great potential," comments KL Rahul
Adding on to the initial praise for Rana, KL Rahul has highlighted his rapid growth and his evolution as a modern-day young cricketer. He emphasized Rana's performance across all formats and how crucial his new ball breakthroughs were.
However, he has also opined on the other hand that he is a relatively inexperienced player, and the team is backing him as they have spotted immense potential in the pacer. He said that Rana possesses the skillset that India has long been striving for.
"So, he's still someone who's developing but we see great potential and it's amazing to see what he's been able to do. He bowled brilliantly in Australia as well and to take the new ball here and get us those crucial wickets is what we expect out of him and it was really pleasing to see that," he concluded.
