KL Rahul to KICK ASIDE Rohit Sharma and become India's Test Captain

KL Rahul’s solid performances in the ongoing IPL 2025 for Delhi Capitals have boosted his chances to lead the India National Cricket Team in the upcoming five-match Test series in England.

A MyKhel report claimed that the Indian selectors are keeping a close eye on KL Rahul, especially since Rohit Sharma’s form has taken a major dip in the ongoing IPL 2025.

Rohit Sharma had made a strong case to continue as captain after his impressive performances in India’s victorious ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign in Dubai, but things haven’t looked the same since.

His struggle to score runs for the Mumbai Indians in the ongoing IPL 2025 has raised serious concerns among the national selectors about his position as Test captain.

On the other hand, KL Rahul has the experience of leading the India National Cricket Team in Tests earlier, and even though his captaincy record is mixed, his calm approach and experience in English conditions give him an edge over Rohit Sharma.

If the right-hander KL Rahul continues to perform well in the ongoing IPL 2025 and shows good leadership skills, the Indian selectors might give him the Test captaincy for at least the England tour. However, not everyone in the BCCI is on the same page regarding this idea.

Indian selectors are worried about Rohit Sharma's form

Some officials believe Rohit has done well as a Test captain, particularly in home conditions, and backed his experience for a tough series like England. But with Rohit’s bat going silent even on home turf, doubts are growing about his ability to contribute overseas, even as a batter.

Presently, only 4-5 players are reportedly locked in for the playing XI for the upcoming Test series in England. With Virat Kohli stepping away from captaincy and youngsters like Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal not yet ready for the role, the selectors have limited options.

As reported by MyKhel, Indian speedster Jasprit Bumrah and wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul are seen as the front-runners for the Test captaincy, but Rohit’s time is all but over now. A source told the portal, “The selectors must be very worried about Rohit's form.”

Sai Sudharsan, Sai Kishore, and Karun Nair are likely to be picked for the England tour

On the other hand, Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair are also being considered for the upcoming Test series against England. Sai Sudharsan’s strong form for the Gujarat Titans in the ongoing IPL 2025 has caught the attention of the selectors, especially because of his solid batting technique, which could suit Test cricket. Sai has already amassed 273 runs in five games so far this season.

There’s even some buzz around Sai Kishore, who has taken 10 wickets so far in the ongoing IPL 2025. On the other hand, Karun Nair has had a remarkable domestic season, and the Indian selectors could reward him for his hard work.

Speaking about Rahul, the Indian batter scored 185 runs in three games in the league so far. Delhi Capitals is currently ranked second on the IPL 2025 points table, having won all four games so far in the tournament.
