There have been rumors that the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are planning a trade for wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul ahead of IPL 2026 after their disappointing 2025 campaign.

However, the Delhi Capitals (DC) are reportedly unlikely to let go of the star batter, given his importance to the team.

In the IPL, trades and player releases are a routine part of the off-season, with high-profile names or unexpected deals attracting major attention.

Teams can trade until a week before the auction. There is also another window after the auction that continues until a month before the next season starts.

Franchises can negotiate either through all-cash agreements or player-for-player swaps, depending on what best suits their roster-building strategy.

KKR Face Leadership Void After Forgettable IPL 2025

Kolkata Knight Riders had a forgettable IPL 2025. They entered the season as defending champions but finished eighth with only five wins in 14 matches. Veteran batter Ajinkya Rahane made an impact with the bat, but the team was inconsistent throughout the tournament.

Notably, Rahane recently stepped down from captaincy duties for Mumbai in domestic cricket, raising doubts about his willingness to continue as KKR skipper.

The franchise will need to find a captain and a dependable wicketkeeper-batter. Quinton de Kock endured a poor season with the bat, managing just 152 runs in eight outings. They also lacked strong domestic wicketkeeping options.

KL Rahul Hit One of His Career-Best Strike Rates in IPL 2025

KL Rahul had impressive outings in IPL 2025 with the Delhi Capitals. The right-handed batter scored 539 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 149.72, his highest strike rate in an IPL campaign since 2018, including a century and three fifties.

Rahul also became the fastest player to reach 5,000 runs in IPL history. He has scored 5,222 runs from 145 IPL matches at an average of 46.21 and a strike rate of 136.03, including five centuries and 40 half-centuries.

The 33-year-old had previously captained Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for three seasons but was surprisingly released before the 2025 mega auction. Delhi Capitals secured his services during the mega auction.

Rahul has 2,265 runs in 72 T20Is at a strike rate of 139.12, with two centuries and 22 fifties. His last appearance for India in the format came in the 2022 World Cup semifinal against England.

Delhi Capitals Unlikely to Release KL Rahul Amid Trade Buzz

RevSportz journalist Rohit Juglan dismissed speculation about KL Rahul’s potential move to Kolkata Knight Riders. He added that Delhi had no intention of a trade.

“KL Rahul, who is being linked with KKR, at this point of time there is no certainty. I have spoken to a couple of people in Delhi, and honestly, I didn’t get any signal that Rahul is moving forward in any way towards KKR. As of now, there is nothing like that. If something does come up, obviously, we will talk about it. For now, these are just trade talks going around.”
