The defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), will be superbly confident going into IPL 2025. But there will be a huge change in the leadership department as they will be without captain Shreyas Iyer for this edition of the competition.
Many speculated Venkatesh Iyer would take the role of KKR’s captaincy, especially after gaining such a huge price at the mega auction. But the purple franchise went with Ajinkya Rahane because of his experience.
The former Indian captain came into the mega on the second day and was signed by the three-time champions for the base price.
KKR’s opening clash of IPL 2025 under rain threat
The Eden Gardens will host the opening game of the IPL 2025 between the Knight Riders and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on March 22. But the game could be spoiled with rain.
They will also be without their mentor, Gautam Gambhir, who became India’s head coach just after the 20-over league.
KKR will fly to the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati for the second encounter against the Rajasthan Royals on March 26, before they face the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium.
That will be a mouth-watering clash of the event. Kolkata has gained just 11 victories in 34 clashes in the face-off, with four wins coming in the last five clashes.
Knight Riders will be back at home for a repeat of last year’s final encounter against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, who will be eager to win against the opposition.
In their first afternoon fixture of the edition, Knights will be up against the Lucknow Super Giants on the first week of April.
KKR will be on the road for the next two encounters against the Chennai Super Kings and the Punjab Kings. Chennai has also enjoyed a heavy lead of 19-10 over the Rahane-led side, with just two victories in the last seven clashes.
KKR counts on home advantage for the second half of the IPL 2025
The second half of the season will begin with Knight Riders’ two successive home games at the Eden Gardens against Gujarat Titans and the Punjab Kings.
Last year, the Kings chased down a record score at the ground and will hope to carry the same confidence in the new edition.
Despite that defeat, KKR has enjoyed a lead of 21-12 over Punjab in the tournament’s history. They will move to the Arun Jaitley Stadium for the next group-stage encounter against the Delhi Capitals before facing the Rajasthan Royals in another afternoon clash.
The last few league-stage games will come thick and fast for the three-time champions, making it incredibly important to be in the winning momentum. They will host the Super Kings before traveling to the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium for the return fixture against the Sunrisers.
Their last league game will also be against Bengaluru in an away contest. They will hope to qualify for the final to get the home support at the Eden Gardens.
