A dramatic moment stunned everyone during the T20 World Cup 2026 match between New Zealand vs Afghanistan when Lockie Ferguson collapsed on the ground after completing a run-out at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, February 8.
How the run-out happened on the final ball
The shocking scene went viral on social media, with fans worried about the New Zealand fast bowler’s condition. This incident happened on the last ball of Afghanistan’s innings when Lockie Ferguson bowled a slower delivery to Mohammad Nabi.
The ball was wide outside the off stump. Nabi reached out and hit it towards the deep cover region. Nabi and Azmatullah Omarzai ran quickly and completed the first single safely. Azmatullah then tried to go for a second run, but it was a big mistake because the run was not there.
Neesham’s perfect throw and Lockie Ferguson’s huge effort
At deep cover, James Neesham was quick to react to the situation as the all-rounder picked up the ball cleanly and then threw it hard and flat towards the bowler’s end. Seeing the ball coming, Ferguson sprinted towards the stumps.
In a stunning effort, the Kiwi pacer caught the throw, broke the stumps in one motion, and completed a perfect run-out. At that moment, Azmatullah was still far away from the crease and had no chance to survive, as he was run out after scoring 14 runs from just 7 balls, which included two big sixes.

Gulbadin Naib leads Afghanistan’s strong batting show
Meanwhile, Afghanistan made a strong statement in their first group match of the T20 World Cup 2026 with a powerful batting show, led by Gulbadin Naib. Thanks to Naib’s brilliant knock of 63 runs from just 35 balls, Afghanistan posted an impressive total of 182 for 6 against New Zealand.
It was Naib’s first-ever half-century in the T20 World Cup. Afghanistan was under pressure early in the innings. They lost both openers quickly when Lockie Ferguson struck twice in one over. Ibrahim Zadran was dismissed for 10, while Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored 27 before getting out.
At the end of six overs, Afghanistan was struggling at 44.2. At that time, Naib stepped up, played smart cricket, and slowly rebuilt the innings while also keeping the scoreboard moving at a fast pace. His knock gave Afghanistan full control and the best chance to beat the Black Caps.
History on Afghanistan’s side as Mujeeb strikes early
Actually, history is in Afghanistan’s favor, as they have never lost a T20 World Cup match after scoring more than 175 runs while batting first. On the other hand, New Zealand has never chased down a target higher than 167 in T20 World Cups.
While defending the big target, Afghanistan got the perfect start with the ball as well. Spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman turned the match early by taking two wickets in two balls in the second over of New Zealand’s chase. He removed Finn Allen and Rachin Ravindra back-to-back in Chennai.
