Pakistan’s all-format skipper Babar Azam smashed his maiden century for the Colombo Strikers franchise in the ongoing edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL). Babar Azam notched up his 10th century in T20 cricket, becoming only the second batter to achieve this feat after Chris Gayle.

Babar Azam chose to participate in the LPL instead of Canada’s G20 League to acclimatize to the conditions before the Asia Cup 2023. Babar made a remarkable comeback in the tournament after a disappointing first game, and he was awarded Player of the Match in the second match.

The 28-year-old batter scored 104 runs off 59 deliveries against the Galle Gladiators at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Monday, August 7. The right-handed batter played a crucial role in helping the team chase down a challenging target of 189 runs with seven wickets to spare.

Following the match, Babar Azam was awarded Man of the Match for his brilliant century. The batter asked reporters to wrap up the interview as he needed to pray. Pakistani cricket journalist Farid Khan shared a clip of the incident on Twitter.

Babar scored 211 runs in four matches at a strike rate of 147.55 in the LPL 2023, making him the top run-scorer of the season. The Colombo-based team was in third place on the points table with two wins and two losses.

“This is my first league and I am looking forward to playing all the matches. I joined the team a couple of days back and felt really happy after meeting my teammates. We have a young team and everyone is looking forward to giving their best, improving and performing well for the franchise,” he earlier said.

“My mindset is always positive. I will give my 100% to Colombo Strikers. We have a good range of players, a good combination of seniors and juniors on the side. Dickwella and I play a lot of cricket together and know each other well.

“I think 4-5 from the team will be playing for Sri Lanka, that’s good for us, good for their team and good for youngsters to learn new things from experienced senior players. When you share a dressing room with senior players you take positive things,” Babar added.
