Lucknow Super Giants' (LSG) road to the playoffs is slowly getting off track as the Rishabh Pant-led side hasn't been able to be consistent in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The loss against Delhi Capitals surely would've put them in a spot of bother in terms of qualification.
Lucknow Super Giants faced a poor 8-wicket loss against Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The 40th game of the tournament between the teams took place at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Tuesday (22nd April).
Delhi Capitals defeat Lucknow Super Giants by 8 wickets at Ekana Cricket Stadium
Delhi Capitals registered their 6th win in the Indian Premier League as they outshone the Lucknow Super Giants in all three departments. The Axar Patel-led side bagged two important points and strengthened their position at number two on the points table.
Lucknow Super Giants were asked to bat first, and credit to the openers Aiden Markram (52) and Mitchell Marsh (46), they had a vital start. The team added 87 runs for the opening partnership and it seemed that they would pile up a massive total on the board.
However, after that, the Delhi Capitals made a solid comeback, making run-scoring hard for the Lucknow Super Giants. They reduced the hosts from 87/0 to 110 for four in no time. Ayush Badoni (36) played a magnificent hand down the order that powered Lucknow Super Giants to a total of 159 for six. Delhi Capitals lost Karun Nair early, but Abishek Porel (51) and KL Rahul (57*) stitched 69 runs for the second wicket to take the game away from the opposition. Skipper Axar Patel (34*) hit some lusty blows as Delhi Capitals chased the target with eight wickets in hand.
Here's how the Lucknow Super Giants can qualify for the IPL 2025 playoffs
With the loss against Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants bagged their fourth loss in the 9th game. They now have 5 wins with 10 points under their belt so far in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
To reach 16 points, which is considered the mark for qualification, Lucknow Super Giants need to win three out of their remaining five games in the tournament now. This will take them to the playoffs without even depending on others.
LSG will still have a chance to qualify for the playoffs of the IPL 2025 even if they manage two wins out of their remaining 5 games. This will take them to 14 points, but they will have to depend on the NRR as well as how other results pan out.
However, if they lose more than three games, then it might mean curtains for them in the tournament. Even at 12 points, they wouldn't be safe, as only once has a team with 12 points made it through to the playoffs (SRH in IPL 2019).
The next three matches of the Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2025
Lucknow Super Giants will be next seen in action when they take on Mumbai Indians in their next game on Sunday (27th April) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After that, they will go to Dharamsala to play against Punjab Kings on 4th May. Then, will return home to take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru on 9th May.
