Experienced South African and Delhi Capitals (DC) pacer Lungi Ngidi bulldozed the batting order of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Ekana Stadium on Wednesday, April 1. He single-handedly plucked 3 wickets in his 3.4 overs spell, in exchange for 27 runs only.
The home team, Lucknow Super Giants had a below-par performance with their bat on the home ground. Apart from their opener Mitchell Marsh and the middle-order batter Abdul Samad, the remaining batting part of LSG looked fragile against the firing DC bowling attack. The Delhi bowling unit looked more fierce as Lungi Ngidi was in rhythm tonight.
In his effective spell, the paceman clinched Nicholas Pooran, Mohsin Khan, and Anrich Nortje. Tuesday's wicket of Pooran was very important for DC, as the West Indian batter could be dangerous in this format of the game. A slower, full-length delivery from Lungi Ngidi trapped the batter for a bowled out.
Delhi Capitals pacer Lungi Ngidi credited Dwayne Bravo for helping him with bowling lessons
During the innings break, the seamer credited Dwayne Bravo with reshaping his bowling. Bravo, a former West Indies all-rounder, who was infamous for his slowers, taught Ngidi how to do it. The delivery, which took the bales of Pooran, was around 112 cases.
After the conclusion of the first innings, Lungi Ngidi explained how Bravo helped him in his bowling. Meanwhile, the former cricketer is now a coach in the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) squad.
The Delhi Capitals' bowling unit performed as a unit to restrict the Lucknow Super Giants
"Trying to use the bigger side, we know the type of ball-striker he is. No pace to work with, trying to do him in the air. Used the dip too. The last one was the best wicket, executing the wide slower yorker is hardest for me. At the World Cup, I mentioned that Bravo told me I need a deceptive slower ball. It took years of practice. I'm close to 100% but not there, trying to emulate Bravo," Ngidi said.
LSG bowlers barely allowed the opposing batters to open their arms throughout the innings. Along with Lungi Ngidi, the other bowlers of the team also utilised the deck very well to restrict Super Kings Giants for only 141 runs in 18.4 overs. In front of the Capitals' bowling attack, the LSG batting unit was not able to survive until the 20th over of the phase.
DC needs 142 to win the match
Experienced Indian pacer T Natarajan also bowled well in the match, taking 3 crucial wickets. Natarajan got the wickets of Ayush Badoni, Abdul Samad, and Mohammed Shami. The wicket of Samad was very crucial as he was a set batter on the crease. Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel took a brace while another spinner Kuldeep Singh picked up a scalp as well.
To win the match, the Delhi Capitals, the away team in the game, will have to score 142 runs in 120 balls. The target on paper looks easy to get, but the wicket can offer a lot to the bowlers in the second innings as well.
