England's national selector Marcus North has revealed the real reason why Harry Brook was handed over the Test captaincy; instead, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) decided to bring back Joe Root after Ben Stokes retired from international cricket.

England’s managing director Rob Key said that England felt it was too early to hand the Test captaincy to Brook. The 26-year-old is already England's white-ball captain and has been the Test vice-captain since last year's Ashes.
Key had said, “It’s just too soon for Brook. This feels like the right time for Root." Now, England national selector Marcus North revealed that Harry Brook was not made Test captain because the ECB wants him to stay focused on leading the white-ball teams ahead of the ICC ODI World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe.
Marcus North reveals real reason Harry Brook missed England Test captaincy
The selector praised Brook's growth as a leader, saying he has done an excellent job in white-ball cricket and has helped England become the number one ranked T20I team in the world. However, England now slips to the second position, with India retaining the top spot on the ICC T20I rankings, but they remain “one of the best teams in the world” in the format.
North has further noted that they have won their last two ODI series, including the recent 2-1 ODI series win over India at home, so they are heading in the right direction towards the ICC ODI World Cup 2027. Amid this, England Test squad vs Pakistan announced, RCB star replaces Jacob Bethell at No.3; Dan Lawrence returns.
Marcus North said in a Sky Sports video: “I think Harry Brook has obviously been a fantastic player for us across all three formats. He remains an incredibly important part of the team. I think his leadership in the white ball is maturing with every series. We've seen that through our T20 side getting to the No. 1 ranking in the world during the summer.”

The selector also pointed out that leading all three formats is a huge responsibility, which is why the ECB decided to hand the Test captaincy back to the experienced legend Joe Root.
North further said, “So, you know, doing a fantastic job there with an eye on the World Cup at the back end of next year, working with Brendan McCullum. You know, that's a key focus. And doing all three formats is a huge ask for any captain.”
However, North made it clear that Brook remains a future candidate to lead England in Test cricket. He signed off by saying, “I have no doubt that the time will come for Harry, but we're very blessed that we've got someone like Joe, who's so experienced and is going to do such a great job this time around with Harry and Brendan working in the white ball space.”
