Mahela Jayawardene’s successor as the head coach of the Mumbai Indians in the IPL is expected to be Mark Boucher.
According to the most recent information, Simon Katich will take over as head coach of MI Cape Town in the SA20 competition, contrary to a story from ESPNcricinfo on Tuesday that claimed Boucher would assume that role.
The Mumbai Indians organization confirmed Katich’s hiring on Thursday in a media statement, adding that Hashim Amla will serve as his assistant as the team’s batting coach, while Robin Peterson will serve as general manager. Fielding coach James Pamment will remain in his position.
On the T20 franchise circuit, Katich is one of the most sought-after coaches. He has held various positions with IPL teams, including head coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore for two months, assistant coach at Sunrisers Hyderabad for two months, and Jacques Kallis’ assistant at Kolkata Knight Riders.
Earlier this year, he abruptly left that position due to “bubble fatigue.” Most recently, Katich served as the men’s Hundred finalist Manchester Originals’ head coach, leading them to a runner-up finish against Trent Rockets.
Mahela Jayawardene elevated to global roles with Mumbai Indians:
The club recently overhauled its current coaching setup, which was followed by the hiring of additional support staff. Zaheer Khan, who served as the director of cricket operations up until last season, has been promoted to the position of global head of cricket development, replacing Mahela Jayawardene, who has been the head coach of the Mumbai Indians since 2017. Both of them will be involved with the group’s three teams.
One of Jayawardene’s responsibilities is to oversee the coaching staff at each of the three franchises. To that end, he collaborated with the ownership group of the Mumbai Indians to determine the coaching staff for each of the three teams, the specifics of which are anticipated to be revealed this week.
There has been considerable interest in the IPL team’s replacement for Jayawardene since the latter accepted the new position, and Boucher may be the right candidate.
The SA20 player auction is scheduled for September 19 in Cape Town.
