England fast bowler Mark Wood dished out a sharp bouncer to Australia all-rounder Cameron Green on Day 1 (Friday, November 21) of the first Test at the Optus Stadium in Perth. The well-directed short pitch came in Australia’s first innings after England were bowled out inside two sessions on the opening day.

The Ben Stokes-led team was bowled out for 172 runs after winning the toss. In response, the hosts got off to a disastrous start as debutant Jake Weatherald perished for a duck. They lost four wickets, including Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne, for 31 runs. Cameron Green came to the crease at No. 6.

Play stopped immediately as the physio came out to conduct the mandatory concussion assessment. Green looked shaken after the blow, taking a moment to breathe and sip water before continuing.

England’s bowlers dominated after tea. Marnus Labuschagne was beaten for pace by Jofra Archer, Steve Smith edged one after a scratchy stay, and Usman Khawaja also nicked off. England’s pacers continued to hit the pitch hard and extract sharp movement, keeping Australia on the back foot.

England Bowled Out For Just 172 Runs in First Innings

Earlier, England were bowled out for just 172 inside 33 overs. Zak Crawley edged to the slips in the opening over. Mitchell Starc ran through the top order as England slipped to three down within the first hour. Harry Brook and Ollie Pope showed resistance.

Brook scored 52 from 61 balls and Pope added 46 from 58. However, Brook’s dismissal triggered a collapse. The final five wickets fell for only 12 runs. Joe Root was dismissed for a duck after seven deliveries, while Ben Stokes was bowled cheaply as well.

Jamie Smith scored 33 from 22, and Ben Duckett added 21, but no other batter reached double figures. Starc finished with outstanding figures of 7 for 58, while debutant Brendan Doggett claimed two wickets and Cameron Green chipped in with one.

Definitely Not All Five Tests - Mark Wood

Before the opening Test, Mark Wood admitted that he would not be able to play all five matches in the series. He stated that his workload must be managed according to how his body feels after each game.

In a video shared by cricket.com.au, Wood mentioned that the plan is to review his fitness after every Test. Wood hoped to stay fresh enough to maintain his pace and contribute whenever he takes the field.

“Definitely not all five (Tests). I think it just depends; review it after every game. This one, I have not played a lot of cricket, but I have been there before. So, I hope to be fresh enough to keep the speed gun up and do a little bit of work to compete in a Test match,” Mark Wood said.
