Ireland’s experienced pacer Barry McCarthy created one of the most unusual moments in T20 World Cup history in Colombo on Sunday, February 8. It should have been the normal 19th over in Sri Lanka’s innings in the T20 World Cup 2026 group match, but it turned into a strange and dramatic over that left Ireland players, fans, and even Barry McCarthy himself stunned.

Barry McCarthy's chaotic over in Sri Lanka vs Ireland T20 World Cup 2026 clash

The over began in chaos at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. McCarthy’s very first delivery was a high full toss that went above the shoulder of Sri Lankan batter Kamindu Mendis. The umpire called it a no-ball. To make things worse, the ball went past Ireland’s wicket-keeper, Lorcan Tucker, and rolled over the boundary for four runs.

Since it was a no-ball, Sri Lanka got a total of five runs without a legal ball being bowled. Well, it was just the beginning of the chaos in Colombo. McCarthy then bowled two wide balls in a row, giving Sri Lanka extra runs. Then Mendis smashed the free hit for a huge six, which meant Sri Lanka scored 15 runs from just one legal delivery off McCarthy.

Later, Mendis collected two more runs off the next ball. The Irish pacer bowled another wide, and then the Sri Lankan pacer ran two more runs before finally being caught by George Dockrell on the next delivery. Mendis’s innings ended at 44 runs off just 19 balls.

The drama continued as McCarthy struck again in the next delivery. On the penultimate legal ball of the over, he dismissed Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka for a duck. But the Irish bowler bowled another wide after that and then finally finished the over with a dot ball to Wanindu Hasaranga.

Barry McCarthy makes an unwanted record in the T20 World Cup

By the end of this unforgettable over, McCarthy had bowled 11 deliveries in total. He gave away 19 runs but also took two wickets in two successive balls. The combination of wides, a no-ball, sixes, and wickets made this over one of the most extraordinary in T20 World Cup history.

It was the joint-longest over in T20 World Cup history, and fans couldn’t stop talking about it. McCarthy’s expenses didn’t help Ireland, as they fell short by just 20 runs while chasing 164 runs against Sri Lanka in their Group B match of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2025.
