In a recent development, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have been dealt a major blow during the IPL 2025 season. According to the latest reports, Sri Lanka fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana might be ruled out of the ongoing Indian Premier League for the Super Kings due to injury.
The Super Kings, led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, started their IPL 2025 campaign on a high note with a four-wicket win over Mumbai Indians at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, March 23. However, fans questioned the absence of Matheesha Pathirana from the playing XI in their season opener.
Matheesha Pathirana to Be Ruled Out of IPL 2025 Season?
In a video shared on the 'Cheeky Cheeka' YouTube channel, the anchor opened up about Matheesha Pathirana's absence from CSK’s opening match. He said that Pathirana went back to his old bowling action. The anchor revealed that Pathirana might be injured and could even be ruled out for the season.
"He went back to his old action. Unlike CSK, to retain a player for 13 crores and not back in the first game, we have to wait and see if it is an injury problem or not. One of the news items I am getting is that he is injured and he might be out for the season. I don't know if it is true or not. News like this is around the IPL a lot. We cannot trust any of the news until it is official news," the anchor said.

Matheesha Pathirana Left Out of CSK Playing XI in Season Opener
Pathirana has been a key player for CSK in recent seasons. Pathirana was replaced by Australian pacer Nathan Ellis in the playing XI. CSK has not officially disclosed the reason for his exclusion.
CSK opted for Noor Ahmad, Rachin Ravindra, Sam Curran, and Ellis as four overseas players in the lineup. Ellis conceded 38 runs in his four overs and dismissed Mitchell Santner.
Meanwhile, left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed impressed with figures of 3/29, while the franchise's most expensive purchase (₹10 crore), Noor Ahmad, justified his price tag with a brilliant spell of 4/18.
Matheesha Pathirana's Impressive Record with Chennai Super Kings in IPL
Pathirana joined CSK as a replacement in IPL 2022. He has established himself as a key death-over specialist for the franchise. The fast bowler was retained for Rs 13 crore ahead of the IPL mega-auction. He has taken 34 wickets in 20 matches at an economy rate of around 7.8.
Pathirana’s IPL 2024 campaign was cut short due to a hamstring injury sustained. Despite missing crucial games, he had already taken 19 wickets that season.
Apart from the IPL, Pathirana has also made an impact in leagues like the Lanka Premier League, International League T20, and SA20. He has picked up 30 wickets in 19 T20Is and 17 wickets in 12 ODIs for Sri Lanka in international cricket.
