New Zealand could suffer a huge injury blow ahead of the final against India in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The much-awaited match is scheduled to be played on Sunday (March 9) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.
With less than two days remaining before the final takes place, New Zealand Matt Henry is an injury doubt for the huge clash. The right-arm pacer could miss the match owing to a shoulder injury.
Henry got injured in the semi-final clash vs South Africa
He picked up the injury while taking the catch to dismiss Heinrich Klaasen during the semifinal against South Africa earlier this week.
He had to leave the field after the incident but returned to bowl two overs late. Not only that, Matt Henry also made a diving effort after returning to the field. However, he is now doubtful for the upcoming match against India.
New Zealand issues an official update
New Zealand head coach Gary Stead has delivered an update on the bowler, saying that his fitness status was still "unknown". At the same time, Stead made it clear that New Zealand will not be in any hurry to rule Matt Henry out of the final.
"I guess the positive thing from our perspective is he got back out there to bowl," Stead said. "We've had some scans and stuff done on him, and we're going to give him every chance to be playing in this match. (But it's) still a little bit unknown at this stage."
"He's obviously pretty sore just from landing on the point of his shoulder. Hopefully he will be okay," he added.
A Champions Trophy to remember for Matt Henry:
Matt Henry has enjoyed a stunning campaign in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The New Zealand pace spearhead is currently the highest wicket-taker in the tournament. In four games so far, he has taken 10 wickets at an impressive average of 16.70.
Five of his 10 wickets came during the group stage clash against India. New Zealand will be hoping that Matt Henry recovers in time for the final and delivers another good performance against the Men in Blue. In case Henry fails to recover in time, New Zealand could replace him with Jacob Duffy in their playing eleven.
Meanwhile, the Black Caps have already suffered one loss against India in the ongoing tournament and will be looking to avenge it by winning the final. New Zealand are eyeing their second Champions Trophy title and first since 2000. Incidentally, they had defeated India to win their first Champions Trophy title and will be hoping to win the upcoming game as well.
