Matthew Mott has stepped down as England's white-ball head coach, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced on Tuesday (July 30).
The 50-year-old's departure was very much on the cards after England's disastrous display at the T20 World Cup last month. Although England, who were the defending champions reached the semifinal of the competition, they hardly looked impressive during the tournament.
The Jos Buttler-led side managed to win just one of the four games they played against other Test-playing sides in the T20 World Cup. They bowed out of the tournament after suffering a crushing 68-run loss against eventual winners India in the semifinal.
Last year, England had also failed to defend their ODI World Cup title. Even in that tournament, they struggled to do well and managed to win just three of their nine games. The T20 World Cup was a make-or-break opportunity for Matthew Mott and he failed to inspire England to a record third title.
I am immensely proud: Matthew Mott
England had roped in Matthew Mott in May 2022 and he made an instant impact by guiding England to the T20 World Cup title in Australia. He also helped England win the white-ball series against Australia, Bangladesh, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, and Pakistan. However, he failed to inspire England to do well in ICC competitions and it played a big role in his decision to step down.
"I am immensely proud to have coached the England Men’s team; it has been an honour. We have put everything into trying to achieve success over the past two years, and I am incredibly proud of the character and passion that the team has displayed during that period, including a magnificent T20 World Cup victory in 2022," said Matthew Mott.
"I would like to thank the players, management, and everyone at the ECB for their commitment, support, and hard work during my time. I leave with many great friendships and incredible memories.
"Finally, I would like to thank the England fans, who have always backed us and given us fantastic support wherever we have travelled around the world," he added,
Meanwhile, Mott has been replaced by assistant coach Marcus Trescothick on an interim basis for the rest of the home summer. The former England opener will be the interim coach for the upcoming three T20Is and five ODIs against Australia in September.
