The selection meeting to pick Team India's squad for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka has been postponed by at least one more day.

The meeting was scheduled to take place on Wednesday (July 17). However, it has been postponed for the time being. According to The Hindu's Amol Karhadkar, the meeting is likely to be rescheduled for Thursday. The squads are also expected to be announced by the BCCI on the same day.

While the selection meeting did not take place on Wednesday, there was an introductory meeting including newly-appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir, members of the selection committee as well as BCCI secretary Jay Shah. The meeting was convened by Shah, according to Cricbuzz.

The meeting was held online and lasted for more than an hour. During the meeting, Gambhir provided his input to the selectors on the types of players he wanted in the team. The report also stated that Rohit Sharma could be available for the ODI series even though recent reports stated that the captain would be rested for the series.

With India to play only a handful of ODIs before next year's Champions Trophy, Rohit could make himself available for the series. In case, the veteran batsman decides against it, KL Rahul is likely to lead the team in Sri Lanka.

As far as the T20I team is concerned, the selectors could spring a big surprise. While Hardik Pandya is expected to replace Rohit as the permanent T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav has reportedly emerged as a strong contender.

Pandya was the vice-captain during the T20 World Cup last month and performed well too but his fitness issues could compel the selectors to appoint Suryakumar as the new T20I captain.

India's tour of Sri Lanka 2024:

Meanwhile, Team India are scheduled to play three ODIs and as many T20Is against Sri Lanka. The tour will get underway later this month. The Indian team will be leaving for Sri Lanka on July 22. The T20I series will start on July 27.

All the games are scheduled to take place in Pallekele. On the other hand, the ODIs will begin on August 2. The three-match ODI series is scheduled to take place in Colombo.
