The 27-year-old star spin-bowling all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been officially named as the new ODI captain of the Bangladesh National Cricket Team.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz has replaced Najmul Hossain Shanto at the helm, and with this appointment, Bangladesh will have three different captains across formats.

We believe he has the temperament and maturity to take Bangladesh forward - Nazmul Abedeen

In an official statement released by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), it was announced that Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been handed the ODI captaincy "for the next 12 months."

Chairman of BCB's Cricket Operations Committee Nazmul Abedeen said that the all-rounder has been a consistent performer for the team and is the ideal candidate to take the team forward in ODIs.

"The Board felt that Miraz's consistent performances with the bat and ball, his ability to fight and inspire the team and his energetic presence on and off the field make him an ideal candidate to lead the ODI side during a transitional time," Chairman of BCB's Cricket Operations Committee Nazmul Abedeen said as quoted by Cricbuzz.

"We believe he has the temperament and maturity to take Bangladesh forward in this format. We take this opportunity to thank Shanto for the positivity and character he has demonstrated as captain. He remains very much a part of the leadership group and we know how important his batting is to the team."

Notably, Najmul Hossain Shanto had recently quit the T20I captaincy to focus more on his batting and wanted to continue as the ODI skipper, but the BCB made the ruthless decision to sack him.

It is a huge honour for me - Mehidy Hasan Miraz

Talking about his appointment, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who has scored 1617 runs and taken 110 wickets in 105 ODIs, said that he is honored to get the top job and that leading the country was his dream.

"It is a huge honour for me to be entrusted with this responsibility by the Board," Miraz said in a statement released by the BCB. "Leading the country is a dream for any cricketer and I am grateful for the confidence the Board has shown in me."

"I have every faith in this team. We have the talent and the belief to play fearless cricket. I want us to perform with confidence, play without inhibition, and continue giving our best for the country."

Mehidy Hasan Miraz has a 0-4 captaincy record in ODIs

Currently, Bangladesh have Litton Das as the T20I skipper, Najmul Hossain Shanto as the Test captain, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz as the ODI skipper. This theory of three different captains is not something new in Bangladesh, as previously, when Tamim Iqbal was the ODI skipper, Mominul Haque was the Test captain, and Mahmudullah was the T20I skipper.

Meanwhile, Mehidy has some captaincy experience under his belt as he led the team in the absence of Najmul Hossain Shanto in several matches.

He captained Team Bangladesh in four ODIs in 2024 against Afghanistan and the West Indies and lost all the games. He also led the Test team in the series against West Indies, which ended in a draw. His first stint as a full-time ODI skipper will start with the series against Sri Lanka, which will start on July 2.
