Michael Hussey’s nine-year CSK journey
Michael Hussey spent nearly a decade with Chennai Super Kings, working as the team’s batting coach from 2018 to 2026. After his successful playing career with CSK, he moved into coaching and became an important part of Stephen Fleming’s support staff.
During his nine-season coaching stint, the franchise won three IPL titles in 2018, 2021, and 2023. Hussey focused on keeping training simple while giving batters the freedom to develop their own methods for handling pressure.
He also played an important role in developing young Indian batters and helping them adjust to the demands of senior-level cricket. Hussye also worked with Australia and England as consultant apart from coaching the Welsh Fire in The Hundred.
Michael Hussey’s incredible career in numbers
Hussey, who is famously known as “Mr. Cricket," built a remarkable international career despite making his debut relatively late. He became an important part of Australia’s batting lineup with his solid technique and ability to handle pressure.
He played 79 Tests and scored 6,235 runs at an average of 51.53, including 19 centuries. The former Australian batter also played 185 ODIs, where he scored 5,442 runs at an average of 48.16 and won the 2007 World Cup along with two Champions Trophy titles.
Hussey also played 38 T20Is, scoring at a strike rate of 136.29. One of his biggest moments came in the 2010 T20 World Cup semi-final when his unbeaten 60 helped Australia beat Pakistan.
Speaking about his IPL career, Hussey scored 1,977 runs in 59 matches and became one of CSK’s most popular overseas players. In 2013, he won the Orange Cap after scoring 733 runs in that season. However, CSK has been struggling badly for the last three seasons under Gaikwad.
