After England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett's carnage, the Indian bowlers pulled back the game, and former English skipper Michael Vaughan credits Shubman Gill for the extensive comeback.
India is playing the final Test match against the English side at The Oval, which will act as the decisive Test for India in the first edition of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. However, sent in to bat first, India went on to score a disappointing 224 runs in the first innings.
Next, English batters came into bat, and the openers did a fairly good job, as the two posted 92 runs in the opening partnership. However, after the fall of the openers, the rest of the England batters could not capitalize, as they were bowled out for just 247 runs.
Michael Vaughan forced to laud the Indian skipper Shubman Gill
The Shubman Gill-led Indian side has restricted England in the first innings; all credit to the stunning spell from Mohammed Siraj after Lunch and from Prasidh Krishna after Tea. After bowling out the English batters, the Indians batted, and with Jaiswal scoring quick runs, they have a lead of 52 runs.
“The captaincy of Shubman Gill was outstanding in the afternoon because he brought the field in, and he said to the England players, ‘If you’re going to play good shots, you’re going to be rewarded, but if you don’t, then there’s a chance we’ll take one or two wickets.’"
"There were a couple of really good deliveries from Siraj to get rid of Ollie Pope, who was playing nicely, and Joe Root, who was playing the Joe Root way. Those were two big moments in the afternoon session,” Vaughan said while commenting on BBC Sport.
Vaughan sides with India having the upper hand at The Oval
Earlier on the second day of the Oval Test, English all-rounder Chris Woakes was sidelined with a shoulder injury. Hence, according to the former English captain, India and skipper Shubman Gill have an early advantage with one of England's main bowlers sidelined.
“I’d rather be India, with the fact that England don’t have Chris Woakes and tomorrow the sun’s going to shine. You would think this pitch would quieten down, but if it stays like this, it’s going to be a great game."
"It’s had movement throughout, and the standout partnership of Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley looked like it exploded England ahead—and then India remembered to bowl at the stumps, they bowled a bit fuller,” Vaughan added.

Jaiswal dropped twice in the second innings at The Oval
Yashasvi Jaiswal has been dropped twice in the second innings of the Oval Test, first early in the innings on Day 2, when Harry Brook dropped him after the batter edged a ball that travelled quickly to the second slip.
After the first drop, he was dropped on another occasion by the English opener Zak Crawley, who was placed at third slip and dropped another quick edge from Jaiswal early on Day 3.
Young Yashasvi continues to dominate alongside night watchman Akash Deep as they take the Shubman Gill-led Indian side past 100 runs in the second innings.
