Former cricketer Kevin Pietersen will join the England men's white-ball teams as a Specialist Mentor ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. After multiple setbacks in Tests, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has started to shift their focus to their white-ball teams as the next ODI World Cup is approaching soon. The appointment of Kevin Pietersen will bolster their coaching set-up, but Michael Vaughan has doubts about how the coaching team will mobilize with so many big names in a single string.

Speaking on the BBC, the former England captain emphasized the CV of Kevin Pietersen. Years before the beginning of the Twenty20 format, Pietersen was one of the few batters who took his batting to a new dimension with a fearless approach. Additionally, after retirement, he gained some experience in coaching as well through the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Capitals.
"The one that I know from Kevin Pietersen, and again my time playing and captaining him, he was an ultra-professional, brilliant player, world-class. He's done a bit of mentoring with Delhi in the IPL. He's passionate about the game," Michael Vaughan said about Kevin Pietersen.

While the former cricketer-turned-cricket expert expressed no doubts over the former batter's credibility, he observed something within the coaching set-up which could have a wrong effect on the team's performance going forward.
"The only issue I have is that there's some quite powerful big egos within that coaching setup. You know, I don't see any other team in the world that has such a famous, if you like, coaching setup as Baz McCullum, Kevin Peterson."
"We've got Stephen Fleming in the test team. You add to that Marcus Trescothick. There are some really kind of big names, and I'm not saying that that's a bad thing. I'm just interested to know the dynamic," Vaughan added.

As the former England national cricket team captain, Vaughan knows how Pietersen used to be as a cricketer: an innovator, fearless, and a match-winner. As the coaching staff, he could inject some of his characteristics into the present set of players, which can prove beneficial when the Three Lions are in the race for the 2027 ODI World Cup trophy.
"The KP that I played with, he was an innovator. He was fearless. He was a winner. He knew how to win big games. You know, he'd won a World Cup. That sort of character will just rub off on people. You know, he'll be a great help. I think he'll encourage people to think outside the box with the batting. As a player, he trained as hard as anyone, both fitness-wise and skills-wise," Michael Vaughan stated.
"He had that ability to go on the field and have that flair. As I said, he was a winner. He just wanted to win," he added.
