Former England captain Michael Vaughan has raised questions over the England and Wales Cricket Board's (ECB) decision to delay Stephen Fleming's arrival as the new Test head coach.

The ECB recently confirmed Fleming as England's new Test head coach after weeks of speculation. Also, Joe Root was brought back as the Test captain, replacing Ben Stokes. However, Fleming will not begin his duties immediately, with Marcus Trescothick handling the duties for the Pakistan series.
The former New Zealand captain has been given time to stay with his family in New Zealand before moving to England. He is expected to join the team later this summer and start preparing for England's important Test tour of South Africa in December.

This move irked Michael Vaughan. The Englishman believes that the Pakistan series would have been the perfect time for Fleming to understand English conditions, visit important venues like Edgbaston, meet county coaches, and learn more about the domestic cricket system before the big Ashes series.
Vaughan wrote in his column for The Telegraph: “Stephen Fleming is a good appointment as England’s Test coach, but he should be in position for the start of the Pakistan series rather than taking over fully for the South Africa tour in December. " By starting later it means Fleming will have coached England for just one home Test—against Bangladesh next summer—before the Ashes series.”

He is also worried that Fleming will get very little time to work with Joe Root before the Proteas tour. The Englishman believes that building a strong coach-captain partnership early is important if the struggling Test side wants to return to winning ways.
Vaughan added, “I am therefore surprised that Rob Key has not said you must be here, in charge, for the Pakistan series. We’re in a bit of a mess, but I’m sure Fleming will get it right. I’m sure he’ll get the team performing. The key to this appointment was always going to be the relationship the coach of the Test team has with McCullum, who is clearly still a major operator in English cricket.”

The former England captain admitted that Fleming is very well respected, a great tactician, and knows how to handle the modern player, but he is just a “very good manager," and that’s why he wants the ECB to bring someone who has the real coaching ethic.
He signed off by saying, “I will also be interested to see who coaches the players. Fleming is not a hands-on coach; he is a manager. I look at the backroom team, and I will be disappointed if it stays the same. I want to see one or two new coaches come in and work with this test side. I want to see someone coming in with a real coaching ethic.”
