Middlesex forfeited their first innings during the Rothesay County Championship Division Two match against Derbyshire at the OurCoop County Ground in Derby in a bold attempt to force a result. Middlesex bowled Derbyshire out for 131 and forfeited their first innings to push for a result on the final day.
Persistent rain that washed out the first and third days of the first class match at County Ground, Derby. With Middlesex and Derbyshire sitting fifth and sixth in the points table and still in the promotion race, both teams had plenty at stake and little reason to settle for a draw.
Middlesex Forfeit First Innings After Derbyshire Collapse
Derbyshire resumed on 70/3 on the fourth morning but lost seven wickets for just 61 runs to be bowled out for 131. Fast bowler Naavya Sharma led the attack with 4/36, while Middlesex quickly wrapped up the innings.
Middlesex then forfeited their first innings and sent Derbyshire back to the crease. The decision gave them an opportunity to bowl the hosts out again and chase a manageable target if enough time remained.
The move is permitted under Clauses 15.2 and 15.3 of the MCC Laws of Cricket, which state:
“a captain may forfeit either of his/her side's innings at any time before the commencement of that innings. A forfeited innings shall be considered a completed innings. A captain shall notify the opposing captain and the umpires of any decision to declare or to forfeit an innings. Once notified, the decision cannot be changed.”
Middlesex also secured maximum bowling points for dismissing Derbyshire inside 110 overs. However, their hopes of forcing a result faded as Derbyshire showed much more resistance in their second innings.
Naavya Sharma Leads Derbyshire's First-Innings Collapse
Naavya Sharma made an immediate impact on the fourth morning, striking in his first over. The 20-year-old former England Under-19 fast bowler found the edge of Caleb Jewell before trapping Brooke Guest lbw three deliveries later.
Sharma claimed his third wicket in four overs when he yorked Ben Aitchison, who had scored a century against Middlesex at Lord's in May. Tom Helm then dismissed Anuj Dal, while Shoaib Bashir was trapped lbw after leaving an inswinging delivery.
Will Rogers, making his first-class debut, prevented a hat-trick and helped Derbyshire add 30 runs for their final wicket. Toby Roland-Jones eventually ended the innings by removing Nick Potts caught behind.
Derbyshire's Second-Innings Resistance Ends Middlesex's Hopes
Derbyshire needed another collapse to give Middlesex a realistic chance of chasing a target. Jewell and Matthew Montgomery survived the first 15 overs before Sharma dismissed Jewell, who edged a delivery onto his off stump.
Montgomery continued to frustrate the Middlesex bowlers and faced 62 balls before Roland-Jones trapped him lbw. By then, Derbyshire had moved more than 200 runs ahead, leaving Middlesex with little chance of completing a chase.
Wayne Madsen and Andersson then guided Derbyshire through to tea, with the hosts 239 runs ahead. Only three more overs were possible before bad light stopped play, with Derbyshire on 111/3 and holding a 242-run lead.
The match ended in a draw, giving Derbyshire eight points, while Middlesex took 11 points after securing the maximum bowling points. Both teams will return to action on Wednesday, with Middlesex hosting Lancashire and Derbyshire travelling to Bristol to face Gloucestershire.
