England all-rounder Moeen Ali has announced his retirement from international cricket after being left out of the white-ball squad for the series against Australia.

Moeen Ali stated that he felt it was the right time to retire from international cricket after playing a lot of cricket for England.

Moeen Ali retired from Test cricket for the second time after last year's Ashes series at home. The spin-bowling all-rounder continued to represent the England national cricket team in white-ball formats. Ali represented the Three Lions in the ODI World Cup 2023 and T20 World Cup 2024.

Ali played 68 Test matches for England, scoring 3,094 runs, including five centuries and 15 half-centuries. He also took 204 wickets, with five five-wicket hauls.

The southpaw amassed 2,355 runs in 138 ODIs and took 111 wickets. In T20Is, he scored 1,229 runs and took 51 wickets in 92 matches.

Playing For England Were The Best Days Of My Life - Moeen Ali

Speaking to Nasser Hussain on Daily Mail, Moeen Ali revealed the reason behind his retirement from international cricket.

He said that playing for England was the best time of his life. Ali added that his decision wasn't due to a lack of fitness.

“Playing for England were the best days of my life. I could hold on and try to play for England again, but I know in reality I won’t. Even retiring, I don’t feel it’s because I’m not good enough - I still feel I can play. But I get how things are, and the team needs to evolve into another cycle. It’s about being real to myself,” Moeen said.

England failed to qualify for the final match in the T20 World Cup 2024. The team management decided to bring in younger players to the squad for the upcoming home series against Australia. Moeen, Jonny Bairstow, Chris Woakes, and Chris Jordan were left out of the white-ball squads.

England are currently hosting Sri Lanka for a three-match Test series. The third Test is scheduled to conclude on September 10.

The England team will face Australia in the first T20I on the very next day. Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim white-ball head coach of the England cricket team.
