Abhishek Sharma came and stole the show at the packed Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, and his explosive knock helped India lift the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 on Sunday, March 8. Abhishek Sharma’s performance this time was the perfect response to his critics.

However, before this big night, the young Indian opener was struggling with the bat, and even he was dismissed for ducks in three games and managed only 89 runs in the tournament. When he was going through the rough phase, the former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir had slammed Abhishek’s aggressive batting style during the tournament.

The innings quickly turned explosive as the Punjab lad started attacking the bowlers from all directions and raced to his maiden T20 World Cup half-century in just 18 balls, giving the Men in Blue the perfect start in the final against the Black Caps.

His fearless batting helped India post a massive 255/5 on the board. That strong foundation later played a big role in India’s 96-run victory, and the team eventually lifted the T20 World Cup trophy.

Mohammad Amir credits New Zealand for Abhishek Sharma's stunning knock

After the final, Mohammad Amir reacted to Abhishek Sharma’s knock and admitted that the Indian batter played an impressive innings. At the same time, he also slammed New Zealand, saying their bowling attack looked confused and under pressure during the summit clash.

Amir has pointed out that the New Zealand bowlers kept changing strategies and delivered several loose balls, which made things easier for the Indian batters.

The former Pakistani bowler further noted that the unusual bowling decisions and lack of control allowed Abhishek and the Indian batters to dominate the final and defend the title in style in front of the home crowd.

Never seen New Zealand under this much pressure in my life: Mohammad Amir

Amir said on Geo News: “Abhishek played well today, but credit also goes to New Zealand’s bowling. They were bowling wides and then getting hit for sixes from the same deliveries. It was strange bowling, honestly. Santner first gave the over to Henry, then to Phillips, and then completely changed the plan. I didn’t understand it. I have never seen New Zealand under this much pressure in my life.”

Abhishek Sharma’s experiment works perfectly in the T20 World Cup 2025

Meanwhile, Abhishek Sharma made an interesting change before going out to bat in the title clash. Instead of using his own bat, he decided to try something different and picked up the bat of his teammate Shivam Dube.

The idea came to Abhishek earlier in the day when he felt like experimenting with something new for the important game. So, the young batter simply walked up to Dube and took his bat to the middle, and that change perfectly worked in his and the team's favor.

Abhishek said after the match, “Today I batted with Shivam Dube’s bat, so thank you, Dube. In the morning, I felt like trying something different. Shubman Gill was not around, so I walked up to Dube and picked his bat.”
