Former teammate and infamous Pakistani speedster Mohammad Amir has backed skipper Mohammad Rizwan and has questioned his snub from ODI Captaincy, despite his extraordinary success in Australia and South Africa in the last season.
The Pakistan players might not look down on Shaheen Afridi's appointment as the skipper of the Pakistan ODI side, but are surely disappointed over the snub of Mohammad Rizwan. Rizwan was handed the Pakistan white-ball captaincy back in 2024.
It is strongly believed that Mike Hesson, the new Pakistan white-ball coach, was not on the same page with the selectors to keep Rizwan in for captaincy and was later backed by higher officials over his decision at Monday's selection committee meeting.
Mohammad Amir questions Mohammad Rizwan's snub from ODI Captaincy
After Pakistan announced the appointment of Shaheen Afridi, the fast bowler, as the new ODI skipper, some former cricketers have been left shell-shocked by the sudden move from the PCB. One such player is Mohammad Amir, the former Pakistani left-arm pacer.
Amir, who played in several games alongside the former skipper Mohammad Rizwan, has praised his immense service to the Pakistan side and shed light on his remarkable career as the Pakistan skipper within just one year of his appointment.
Mohammad Amir said, "I don’t think Rizwan has been treated fairly. He led Pakistan to series wins in SA & Australia, something even some of our biggest captains couldn’t achieve."
However, the humiliating exit from the Champions Trophy might have been too much of a lesson for Mike Hesson to keep further faith in Rizwan, the skipper.

Rizwan led Pakistan to just their second ODI Series win in Australia
While mentioning Rizwan's success, as Pakistan's ODI skipper, Mohammad Amir brought to notice that it was under Rizwan's leadership that Pakistan earned their first victory in an ODI bilateral series in Australia since 2002.
This marked just the second time Pakistan could defeat the mighty Australians on their land in an ODI bilateral series. Before this, only once in the history of the game, back in 2002 under Waqar Younis, Pakistan had achieved the feat for the maiden time.
Rizwan also led Pakistan to their first-ever series clean sweep over South Africa on South African soil back in the 2024/25 season. This is a huge milestone for Rizwan as the skipper of the national side.
Will Mohammad Rizwan retain his spot in the Pakistan team following the captaincy snub?
After his removal from Captaincy, another major question arises: whether Rizwan will be retained in the Pakistan Squad in white-ball cricket. The batter is no longer a part of the T20I side, and with Hesson plotting his own strategies, his one-day spot is also thrown into doubt.
However, Mohammad Rizwan was the second-highest run-scorer for Pakistan in the ODI format last season and scored runs regularly at an average of nearly 42, which makes him eligible enough to continue playing the format, but under the new skipper, Shaheen Afridi.
