The ongoing T20 World Cup 2026 has turned into a nightmare for the young Indian opener Abhishek Sharma. World’s No. 1 T20I batter walked into the tournament with big hype and big expectations, but he left everyone shocked with his performance.

T20 World Cup 2026 turns into a nightmare for Abhishek Sharma

In the three group matches he has played, Abhishek Sharma failed to even score a single T20 World Cup run. The left-handed batter has faced just 8 balls in total in this tournament and has failed to open his account. He even missed India’s match against Namibia due to a stomach illness.

His form is a big concern for the defending champions as the tournament progresses into the second round, and things have already gone from bad to worse with the Netherlands losing the game by only 17 runs. His three back-to-back ducks now equal the unwanted record for most consecutive ducks in Men’s T20 World Cup history.

Mohammad Amir compares Abhishek Sharma to Saim Ayub

After another flop show, the former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir launched another attack on Abhishek Sharma. He openly compared Abhishek’s struggle to that of Pakistani youngster Saim Ayub, saying both are facing similar problems at the top level.

Mohammad Amir said on the Haarna Mana Hai show on Geo News, “I'll relate this to Saim and Abhishek. Saim also had this problem when he came to play PSL. He was new. He was hitting no-look shots. No one knew what his weaker side was.

Where he gets stuck. He was getting all the runs from the leg side. As soon as the bowlers got to know... Look at Saim now. As soon as he gets the ball on the 3rd or 4th stump, he can't decide what to do. He's playing hard.”

International cricket exposes weak zones, warns Amir

Amir believes international cricket is a different battlefield. He feels Saim and Abhishek, who depend only on their strong areas, get exposed very fast.

He stressed that the international bowlers study players closely and never bowl in their comfort zones. Once opponents find a weakness, they attack it again and again. He also noted that the openers should know how to play everywhere.

Speaking about Abhishek Sharma’s game, Amir said, “He only scores in his strong zone. As he keeps playing more international cricket, he will be exposed. Salman Ali Agha dismissed Abhishek on the mid-on. He went to hit the mid-on and got beaten up by the Netherlands off-spinner now. International cricket exposes you.”

Wise Advise for Youngsters from Mohammad Amir

The former Pakistani pacer also stressed that Saim has to work hard on his off-side, and until he learns how to hit the fast bowler here, he can’t make runs. Amir further suggested Saim and Abhishek play first-class cricket to know how to decide the ball and in which area to play.

Notably, Abhishek’s struggles are scary for the Men in Blue. In 2026 alone, Abhishek already has five T20I ducks. That equals the record for most ducks by an Indian in one calendar year, matching Sanju Samson. Abhishek got India spot on the back of his IPL heroics, like Saim in PSL.
