Former Pakistan cricketer Mohammad Amir believes that Indian speedster Umran Malik shouldn’t play all three formats. He said that Indian management should be patient with him and give him to settle in.

Umran Malik rose to the ranks quickly after his impressive performances in the IPL. He got an opportunity in the Indian team following his heroics. The speedster performed well initially and was even in schemes of things for the ICC World Cup 2023.

However, he was quite expensive and that raised quite a few doubts in Indian management. Umran Malik didn’t have good outings in the West Indies series as he was taken for a lot of runs and also wasn’t able to take wickets.

Mohammad Amir while talking about Umran Malik cited the example of Haris Rauf, saying that he was rushed into the Test cricket and then after that was injured. He said that Malik needs to be given time. Speaking to the Times of India, he explained:

“It wont be a good idea to play him in all three formats. You can take the example of Haris Rauf. When you get someone with a raw pace, you need to give him time and let him settle down. Haris Rauf was playing white ball cricket and was playing really well.

“Suddenly, he was included in Tests, and he got a niggle during a Test match. Your body needs to be prepared for a particular format. Umran also needs to be given time to settle down. He is a young and talented pacer.”

Umran Malik wasn’t selected for the Indian team for the ICC World Cup 2023. However, this surely won’t be the end of the road for them as he will be roaring to make a comeback into the team.

Let him play limited-overs cricket for some years – Mohammad Amir on Umran Malik

Mohammad Amir further said that Umran Malik will go a long way. He believes that the team needs to play him in limited-overs cricket. He explained:

“He will go a long way. Let him play limited-overs cricket for some years, when you think he has settled down, include him in four-day cricket and then Tests is a slow process but works in the long run.”

Umran Malik so far has played 10 ODIs and 8 T20Is, picking 13 and 11 wickets respectively.
