Veteran pace bowler Mohammed Shami, who has been one of the greatest bowlers for the India team, is among the top wicket-takers for the national cricket team. However, a viral image has sparked controversy alleging that Mohammed Shami is actually 42 years old rather than 34 years on paper.

Shami had been on the sidelines due to an ankle injury after the ODI World Cup 2023 final loss against Australia in Ahmedabad on November 19. He underwent Achilles tendon surgery in February this year. Shami was declared fit to play for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh.

Social Media Sparks Debate on Mohammed Shami’s Age

Mohammed Shami has suffered a lot in recent years, including accusations of domestic violence and match-fixing by his ex-wife. Shami was cleared of the match-fixing allegations by the BCCI's Anti-Corruption Unit. Social media targeted him after India's loss to Pakistan in the T20 World Cup in 2021.

An accusation of age fraud against Shami has surfaced on social media. A user posted a driver's license that allegedly shows Shami's birth year as 1982, claiming he is 42 years old. It is important not to jump to conclusions based on social media posts, given Shami's contributions to Indian cricket.

Age Fraud is a Serious Offense in Indian Sports

The post accusing Shami of age fraud has been deleted by X for violating their rules, but images of the alleged driver's license are still circulating. There is no confirmation or evidence that the document is genuine.

Age fraud is a serious offense in Indian sports, as it violates core values like honesty, fair play, and team spirit.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports’ rules on the matter read: “Fundamental Rationale for the code 3.1 NCAAFS seeks to preserve the core values of sports which are honesty, fair play, and team spirit. 3.2 The Athletes who indulge in age fraud in sports not only violate these core values but also put genuine athletes in a disadvantageous position.”

Finally The Wait Is Over! - Mohammed Shami

After his successful comeback, Mohammed Shami shared a heartfelt post on Instagram and thanked his fans for their support. Shami said that "The wait is over," adding that this is just the start.

“Finally, The wait is over! After 360 days, I’m back on field , stronger and hungrier. 4 wickets for Bengal in Ranji, and this is just the start. Every delivery, every wicket is dedicated to YOU, my incredible fans. Your love fuels my passion! Let’s make this season unforgettable ! #BackStronger #Bengal #Cricket."

Selectors could reconsider including Shami for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024, which is set to begin in Perth on Friday, November 22. He has an impressive record in Australia, where he has taken 31 wickets in eight Tests. There is a 10-day gap between the first and second Tests in the series.
