Mohammed Shami’s injury is proving to be far more severe than initially expected, but the latest update is a big relief for both the Indian pacer and his fans. However, he was already ruled out of the upcoming five-match Test series against Australia.

Originally, Mohammed Shami was scheduled to make a comeback with the recent Test series against New Zealand at home and then head to Australia, but the pacer has been altogether ruled out of Bengal’s Ranji Trophy 2024-25 fixtures as well.

His absence from the Test squad could be a significant blow to India’s chances at the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, especially given the key role Shami has played in previous tours when they tasted historic success on the Australian soil.

After being sidelined with a broken hand following the first Test during the first Test of the 2020–21 tour of Australia, Shami has probably missed his final Test series in Australia, having been ruled out of the upcoming tour. Meanwhile, a positive update revealed about Shami’s fitness and his return to action.

Shami’s participation in the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 would be a crucial step in regaining full fitness ahead of India’s international assignments, especially the England series and Champions Trophy 2025.

A Revsportz report stated: “There's a possibility that Mohammed Shami could make his return for Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Shami has started to bowl at the NCA, recovering from a side strain.”

Notably, Shami has been out of action since the 2023 ODI World Cup in India after suffering an ankle injury for which he underwent surgery earlier this year. Later, the Indian fast bowler’s return was derailed by swelling in his knees while his recovery at the NCA.
