The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly not sending Mohammed Shami to Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25. The team management wants Mohammed Shami to play a few more domestic matches before considering him for a recall to the Indian squad.
Shami recently made a comeback during the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 match against Madhya Pradesh. The right-arm pacer took 11 wickets for 156 runs and scored 37 runs off 36 balls in the second innings. Shami didn’t feel any discomfort while bowling long spells during Bengal's 11-run victory in Indore.
Mohammed Shami Unlikely to be Recalled for BGT 2024-25 Series
According to Cricbuzz, the Board of Control for Cricket in India doesn't want to rush Mohammed Shami's selection. The report added that team management wants him to play more domestic matches before considering him for the five-match Test series.
"It has been learned that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has no immediate plans to send Mohammed Shami to Australia," reported Cricbuzz.
"However, it is understood that the team management prefers he plays a few more domestic games before being considered for an India recall. This suggests that Shami might represent Bengal in the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament, which is set to begin in about a week," the report added.
Devdutt Padikkal to Join India Test Squad Ahead of Five-Match Test Series
The report added that Devdutt Padikkal, who was part of the India A team in Australia, will remain in the country as a backup batter for the upcoming five-match Test series. Notably, the India A team, led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, will return home soon, but Padikkal will train with the Indian Test squad.
This decision comes after injuries and unavailability of top-order batters ahead of the first Test in Perth on November 22. Young batter Shubman Gill has been ruled out due to a fractured thumb, while captain Rohit Sharma is unlikely to play, as he stayed back in India for the birth of his second child.
KL Rahul Suffers Elbow Injury During Match Simulation
KL Rahul suffered an elbow injury but was able to bat during a recent match simulation. Meanwhile, Devdutt Padikkal registered scores of 36, 88, 26, and 1 in his four innings in the India A series against Australia. The left-handed batter made his Test debut during the England series at home earlier this year.
The team management feels Padikkal's experience and familiarity with Australian conditions make him a good backup option. Meanwhile, there is uncertainty surrounding Rohit Sharma's travel plans, as his wife recently gave birth. While he is expected to travel to Australia soon, the exact date remains unclear.
The first Test of the five-match series between India and Australia will be played in Perth, starting on Friday, November 22. It will be important for both teams to start the series on a positive note.
