Indian pacer Mohammed Shami's international career has taken a brief pause; however, the upcoming Asia Cup could be a major opportunity for him, and the Duleep Trophy is cited as a platform to showcase form.
Mohammed Shami has been a regular name in Indian cricket, especially whenever an ICC or an ACC tournament nears. He is India's most successful bowler in ICC tournaments; however, his frequent injuries have kept him out of several crucial contests.
Shami played the ICC ODI World Cup in 2023, where he seemed to be in unstoppable form, but was absent from the field for over a year after the conclusion of the tournament. He returned to play for India in the white-ball series against England due to the impending Champions Trophy, where he represented India as the lone lead pacer in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.
Mohammed Shami's India comeback halted with absence from the Bengal camp
The national selectors are looking forward to the upcoming Duleep Trophy before choosing the Asia Cup squad, and some big names are also lining up for the ongoing edition of the World Test Championship in India.
Mohammed Shami will be featuring for the East Zone since he was added to their squad for the upcoming Duleep Trophy, which gathered interest from several cricket enthusiasts. It remains interesting to see whether the fast bowler has got some steam left to deliver for India.
Although named in the probables for the East Zone side, Mohammed Shami did not report for the camp that is presently on in Kolkata. However, the Bengal management is optimistic of getting his services this season.
"Shami is doing everything to get ready for the season," a Bengal team source told TOI.
Mohammed Shami last played in the 2025 Champions Trophy
Once again, since the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, Mohammed Shami has not played for India. He was, however, seen in the IPL for his new franchise, Sunrisers Hyderabad, after being picked up for a huge INR 10 Crore in the mega auction.
However, after not a very comprehensive outing with his new franchise, he was not considered for the series against England, despite his unwavering experience in Tests on English soil.
The veteran pacer Mohammed Shami has been going through a stop phase of his career over the past few years. However, the pacer, despite injuries and several halts, has never indicated any possible retirement calls.
India's bowling attack a concern ahead of the Asia Cup 2025
Indian pacer Shami has been uncertain about his participation in the Asia Cup due to his absence from the field ever since the IPL and his absence from the camp, which has been organized, citing the upcoming Duleep Trophy tournament.
Jasprit Bumrah has not been reported to be injured, but the Asia Cup concludes just a few days before the onset of the Test series against the West Indies; hence, Bumrah's workload would again be in the way of his playing for India in the continental championship.
Mohammed Siraj, the third most experienced pacer in the current Indian lineup, would also be doubtful due to his excessive workload after a long England series and the upcoming West Indies series. He will also be a crucial part of the white-ball tour to Australia; hence, his participation is also in doubt.
In their absence, the likes of Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana might be the frontline pacers, while some others might also be seen in the role.
