Mohammed Shami has started his IPL 2026 campaign on a good note with the Lucknow Super Giants, taking crucial wickets at the beginning of multiple games. The Bengal pacer cliched the batters like Abhishek Sharma (Sunrisers Hyderabad) and KL Rahul (Delhi Capitals) for ducks in the first overs of the respective matches.
Mohammed Shami had a major surgery
Ahead of the season, when LSG cashed in for Shami, many cricket fans and experts might have raised their eyebrows as the seamer has been out of Team India for a long time now because of fitness concerns. Shami had to go under serious medical surgery, since then, there have been doubts over his fitness. However, by bowling constantly for the Bengal cricket team in the previous domestic season, he proved that he was ready for higher-level cricket.
Indian pacer Mohammed Shami underwent successful surgery on his Achilles tendon in London on February 26, 2024, to fix an ankle injury sustained during the 2023 ODI World Cup. The surgery required a long rehabilitation period, causing him to miss IPL 2024 and the T20 World Cup.
He returned to domestic cricket late in 2024. His return was not so exciting as he sustained a brutal season in IPL 2025, after which the Sunrisers Hyderabad released him from their squad.
In the IPL 2025 season with the Sunrisers Hyderabad, he took only 6 wickets after featuring in 9 matches. The six wickets he took came for 11.23, which was far from his best.
Ups and downs in IPL career
Overall in his IPL career, the bowler picked up a total of 133 wickets in 119 matches for an economy rate of 8.63. During the 2021 season, he bowled at an economy rate of 7.50 for the Punjab Kings to claim 19 scalps in 14 games.
He started to show his true class again in the 2025-26 domestic season with the Bengal cricket team. In the Ranji Trophy 2025-26, the 35-year-old delivered brilliantly for Bengal. He took 38 wickets in seven Ranji Trophy matches, including an 8-wicket haul in the semi-finalals.
