India National Cricket Team skipper Rohit Sharma provided a massive update about the fitness of Mohammed Shami. The opening batter mentioned that the fast bowler experienced swelling in his knee during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and the speedster is being monitored by the medical team.

The absence of Shami is quite evident in the Indian team who are facing Australia National Cricket Team in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. While they won the first game with ease, they were made to toil hard in the pink-ball Test, which they lost by 10 wickets.

One of the reasons behind India losing the game was the lack of support for Jasprit Bumrah. Although Mohammed Siraj picked some wickets, the damage was already done. Had Mohammed Shami been there and with the kind of performances he has put in, it's fair to say that things would've been different.

Mohammed Shami has regained fitness and has made his comeback

Shami, who faced an ankle injury during the ICC World Cup 2023, has regained fitness and has made his comeback. The premier pacer has been putting in the hard yards for Bengal in the domestic circuit, playing in the Ranji Trophy as well as the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

But there has been no clarity on when he will be joining the Indian team in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The pacer is currently monitored by the NCA team, and there have been several reports that he might be there for the last two Tests of the series in Melbourne and Sydney, respectively.

He got some swelling on his knees in SMAT - Rohit Sharma on Mohammed Shami

With no clarity over his availability, Rohit Sharma came up with a positive yet concerning update on Shami. He mentioned that doors are open for him but they want to be sure that the pacer is fully fit. He stressed that the decision to add the pacer to the squad would be taken after BCCI's medical team gives him a clean chit. Speaking in the press conference, he explained:

"Definitely. The door is very much open. We are monitoring him. He got some swelling on his knee in SMAT. We don't want to have a situation where he pulls up in a match. We want to be sure. We don't want to put pressure on him. The BCCI medical team is monitoring him. We will take a call on what they are saying. We have to be careful. The door is open."

NCA team is monitoring the fitness of Mohammed Shami

Recently, a team from NCA, including the head of BCCI's Sports Science wing (Nitin Patel) and a Strength and Conditioning trainer (Nishant Bardule), went to Rajkot to monitor the fitness of Mohammed Shami. More than his performances, they were keen to see whether he would be able to withstand the grueling workload of a Test match.

It remains to be seen what will be the future of Mohammed Shami, especially with a few crucial games and tournaments around the corner. The fast bowler, if included in Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, no doubt will be a massive boost for the team as the series is levelled at 1-1.
