India fast bowler Mohammed Siraj has opened up about performing better for the national team in pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah’s absence. Siraj stated that leading the bowling attack gives him confidence, adding that he felt it was time to put an end to the speculation surrounding his performances.
Siraj finished the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 as the leading wicket-taker. He took 23 wickets at an average of 32.43, including two five-wicket hauls. With Jasprit Bumrah missing two matches, Siraj led the bowling attack and played a crucial role in India winning two Tests during the five-match series.
Mohammed Siraj Impressed for India in Jasprit Bumrah’s Absence
Before the England tour, India’s management had planned to play Jasprit Bumrah in three Tests. Siraj had to lead the pace attack in his absence. The Hyderabad-born pacer improved his performances without Bumrah.
Siraj has a bowling average of 31.05 in Tests, but it drops to 25 when Bumrah is not in the XI. Notably, Siraj has a strike rate of 44 balls per wicket without Bumrah and 57 with him.
The 31-year-old cricketer took six wickets in the first innings of the second Test at Edgbaston. He picked up another five-wicket haul at The Oval, where he finished the match with nine wickets. Siraj proved his ability to lead the attack and guide the team to victory in Tests.
I Thought It’s Time to Stop Such Talk - Mohammed Siraj
In an interview with RevSportz, Mohammed Siraj was asked about his performance during the Oval Test. He also spoke about the discussions surrounding his career. Siraj stated that he felt the timing was right to respond to the growing chatter about his performance on the field.
“When I get an opportunity to shoulder responsibility, even if you look at a mundane series, my performance always grows. Responsibility gives me a different kind of joy, and boosts my confidence," Siraj told RevSportz.
"I told you at Edgbaston that people are talking about me, and it's time to make all that talk stop. I usually am very aware of what I'm doing, and do not pay heed to what people are saying because people do not know my struggle. Despite that, I thought it's time to stop such talk because it was getting too much,” he added.
Was Trying to Spread the Belief That We Can Do It - Mohammed Siraj
Mohammed Siraj credited his improved performances in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah to self-belief. Siraj said that he maintained a positive atmosphere among his teammates and motivated bowlers like Akash Deep to trust in their abilities and replicate past successes.
“With Jassi Bhai (Jasprit Bumrah) not being there due to his back injury and his workload being managed, I tried my bit to keep the positivity in the bowling unit. Whenever I was talking to my teammates, Akash Deep and all, I was trying to spread the belief that we can do it. We can repeat what we have done already,” Siraj explained.
Siraj has been left out of India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup in the UAE, starting on September 9. The pacer will get a break after the England tour. There is a possibility of him being recalled for India’s next assignment on the Australia ODI tour.
